Sure, it's more portable, but look at xbmc's features and upscaling capabilities! A real mediacentre should have capabilities to play digital files, not just burnt dvd's.. For DVD's sure the wii could be fine, but not for xvid/divx and not for 720p+
Because of that, the wii will never be a good mediacentre for many.. XBMC has yet to be beaten

(or properly ported!)
The media center idea was in the spirit of discussing EXACTLY the idea of playing "digital" files. And I don't see anybody discussing the quality of XBMC.

Yep. Now we don't have to rely on that awful Wii-diskdrive lens. Mediacenter ahoy!

D00Ds! WiiNix is going to be the BEST video game console port of Linux EVER! USB HDD, USB keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth, WiiMote as a pointer/mouse!

Why hasn't anyone mentioned how great this is for WiiNix?!??!

Because it's not a big deal. PS3 Linux can do those things IIRC.

Not to mention, I don't know about you guys but I'm not going to choose the Wii Remote over a wireless mouse. But I do infact welcome any further advances in "WiiNix" or anything else being coded for the Wii.

Yes, but the PS3 is over twice as expensive, has a distro of Linux with barely any hardware support, has a HDD built in and was intended to support USB keyboards and Linux.

Yes, but the PS3 is over twice as expensive[...]
On which planet?

This isn't the year 2006, the PS3 doesn't cost $599 anymore

Anyway, who cares about Linux on the Wii?
Thanks to the Wii's *cough* incredibly high value *cough*, $249 can buy you a desktop PC that's capable of running most Linux distros right from the start, has much greater compatibility and is even far more powerful...AND you don't even need an additional USB HDD, which makes a Linux setup on the Wii actually more expensive than a halfway decent desktop PC...
You can even hook up your desktop PC to your HDTV, if you have one, and use a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse (which are available for cheap) to access your PC right from the sofa (you should even find keyboards which are specially designed for this very purpose)...and if you really want to, you could even hook up your Wiimote to your Linux PC and use it as a regular mouse as well...
For me, the simple fact that the Wii only supports 480p is a major turn-off when it comes to using the Wii as a personal computer

Unless it is a 5 year old beige tower, good luck getting a desktop for $250. Said PC would be very ugly, huge, use a lot of power, and be very noisy. And I do doubt it would be "far more powerful" It definitely wouldn't be able to output HD. 1024x768 MAYBE.

How come the first things people say is "The will make linux so much better!" Why the hell does everyone want to put linux on everything?!?!?!!!!!!??!!

GAMES CONSOLES are meant for playing GAMES, not doing your taxes or typing letters. You'll all just hurt your eyes trying to read tiny text on a blurry tv that has a native resolution way lower than what you want to output. Put linux on your computer by all means, use a monitor with a screen resolution that you can actually fit windows onto and read the text. Come on people, see sense. Unless of course you want to run software on top of software, slowing up your already slow systems when the stuff you want to run will usually play nice directly on the hardware.

What this news IS good for, is homebrew emulators and games, things like scummvm could have ALL of the compatible adventure games on a sub drive instead of just a couple. Media players (for those who want them) will be able to store movies and music on an external drive. Nintendo might even be pressured into releasing some sort of official usb drive and relevant firmware updates to use it.

I don't get it. the usb mass storage support enhances wii memory or is it like a giant SD card ?
I guess that mfe player will be more useful than before.

Now we just need a daemon tools channel !
tongue.gif

no go, daemon tools gives a corrupt iso message when trying to open wii isos

EDIT: unless you edit it to implement use of key.bin

Why does nobody mention piracy. It would be perfect for piracy. You can copy the Games on your hdd and dont need a dvd for every stupid game you wanna try.

they were talking about an iso loader..

that doesnt count as piracy to you?

If you read the whole thread you would have seen the whole bit on piracy and whether or not the wii has usb 2.0 which would be needed to pirate.

I am sorry, I missed a few pages. So I just read the part about installing thousands of VC titles, watching movies or any other media center crap and stupid linux. (Does anybody have an idea how I can install Linux on my mothers washing mashine?)

I just wanna say, this would be so great for all the pirates out there!!!

Because it's INTENDED use is for homebrew. Something I entirely agree with. It has also been mentioned that the Wii USB ports are not fast enough to load an iso from a drive, so if you HAD read the entire topic, or even a chunk out of the middle, you would know that people HAD mentioned piracy and HAD came to the conclusion that it isn't going to happen.

this is amazing! u made my day! a few days maybe a week it'll be perfected

Please don't post things like that. Sorry if I sound rude, but all your post is stating is that you want it rushed along. Dev teams don't like being rushed along, and if it's something people have been clamoring for it's even more annoying, unless they're trying to release a half-assed app. The point is, testing and perfecting will probably take longer than a week, trying to say less is kinda like insulting them.

Yeah right, believe it or not, these people might have REAL JOBS.

Right, using the 2GB of the SD card for homebrew is not enough ... we need a 20GB++ Harddrive for our homebrew.
How many homebrew titles are out there? Maybe a 20MB total? well ... yes, we really need hdd support for homebrew.

So instead of anyother crapy implementation of pong by a 13years old, i am really looking forward to that iso loader thing ... which is homebew too ....

Homebrew + Roms for emulators could quickly go over the 2GB limit

Or maybe we want to use the space for more VC games. You know, the ones that were purchased legally and we don't want to download 15 million times?
