Hacking USB Configurable Loader and Cheats

I have searched a whole lot of forums and threads. I have USB configurable loader and my wii is at firmware 4.2.
I choose to turn on Ocarina cheats, and when I go to the game (example, Animal Crossing), none of the cheats work. ny
what am I doing wrong? I was told from some people that I need USB Gecko. Is this true?

When you manage the cheats, after you select which ones you want turned on you have to save them.
