Hardware Upgrading a internal hardrive

How much of a pain in the

is it to upgrade the internal PS3 hardrive and move all the data (that can be moved)? I was thinking of getting one, since I have a choice between a 120 or 250, I was probably going to go with the 250 (thus I could last longer with the space). If it's not that hard to move data from the drive I'd probably look into the changing it to like a 500 or 750 and use the old 120 or 250 as a external.

There's an option to backup your data (Only save data, DLC and such will need to be re-downloaded from the store and install data will need to be re-installed). Depending on the model, swapping your HDD is quite simple. If you have a slim, its as easy as 1,2,3. Just check through sony's guides for it.

If I got some games (such as demon's souls) that have protected saves, I couldn't exactly move those. I think i'd go with the 250, unless a larger size comes out soon (such as the rumored 250 & 500 GB)

Actually, the Backup Utility backs up everything, including protected save files if I'm not wrong.

For normal saves and stuff, you could simply copy the data onto a flash drive or flash memory (if you have the appropriate slots). About the only thing you can't move to external media that way, is protected save files. Of which, I have no idea why game companies started doing this. It is because of this nonsense I had to spend so much extra in order to get a separate hard drive and do a bunch of voodoo to properly move the backup data around.

The internal Backup utility backs up everything - installed games, install data, virtual memory cards, and save files. But of course, the problem is that even when you clear out all the demo's and stuff beforehand, you're still ending up with a lot of data you're forced to back up. I don't know what the PS3 OS does with that storage space perse, but when I did it the first time around, I still had to back up about a third of the available hard drive space on the original 60GB hard drive mine had, which of course was conveniently too large to fit on any flash drives or memory cards I had. Even so, the internal utility does indeed back up everything - it's an all or nothing deal, so restoring from that created backup with a new hard drive does indeed restore every bit of data that was on the ps3 partition.
