Hacking updating a wii to 4.2 safely,currently on 3.2 with softmii on

i have a friends wii to update to 4.2 ,as he wants to use Configurable USB Loader
his wii was softmoded with softmii 2.1.1, which uses cioscorp 1.01
i updated a wii to 4.2 with softmii on a while ago,but cant remember exactly what i did
i know i got told to use dop ios mod first
but cant remember what to do to do it safely

im going to be using xzxero's 4.2 guide ,which i have used several times now on unmoded wii's
but not so much on already moded wii's

You don't need to update for a USB loader. Just install cIOS rev17.

hi mate
do i need to install hermes cios for the usb loader to work propely?
do i need to install IOS222 ,IOS223 IOS249v17 and IOS250 v17

and is it safe to install with softmii on?

i would rather just get rid of softmii altogether
and start fresh,but if straight forward then i could keep it on
