Hacking Update Firmware with a D2C?

Is it possible to update the wii's firmware to the same region (say 3.0J to 3.1J) if you have a D2C key?

The internet update, I think you can but you should research a little bit because I'm not sure

What do you know for sure that you can update it with? Jap games?

Yeah i check if I update to the latest Jap firmware, say using a jap game, that it won't brick.

Also, would it be best to set my country to Japan in case it tries to auto download an english firmware update due to wrong country setting?
