Hacking Update emunand without losing .cia games?

How do I update emunand without losing all my apps? Normally what I'd do is:
1) Get latest gateway patch
2) Put the launcher.dat onto root of sd card
3) Turn on my 3ds
4) Select "format emunand" on the gateway thing
But of course that gets rid of everything on my SD

Why do you format your emunand to update your emunand? I don't get what you're doing.

Go to system settings and update. Done.

What @wurstpistole said. Go to system settings in Emunand, and update there. Don't leave system settings or go to data management, or it'll kick you back to sysnand. Update From system settings in Emunand gets you what you want without formatting.

Who ever told you to do it this way is very wrong. You only format emunand the first time you set it up..

We are back again with another quick update! Here’s what’s new:

* Latest emunand support (10.4) for both o3ds and n3ds

It never says to format the emunand. Once gateway is updated to support the new firmware, you just go to System Settings and update.

Not automatic I would say, you download the newest gateway launcher from their website. Overwrite the Launcher.dat you have in your root with the new one. Then update your 3ds. Newest firmware supported atm is 10.7.

Although I think we got hit with a new fw update like an hour ago. Dont update that yet. Wait for confirmation.

Mine did too, so I just updated. (I'm on emunand anyway, so what?) and all it did was replace my outdated browser (had a 9.2 browser cia installed in 10.7)

If you installed a patched TWL_FIRM it will tell you update. Mine would fail to update after 30% or so.
