I want to be up to date with everything as I haven't don't it in a while. But I know how to update luma I have the luma updater. I have a9lh installed using a guide from months ago and when I try to load my 3ds without sd card in ( by accident) I just get a blue light that quickly goes on the off till I put card back in. Do I have an old version of a9lh and I'm not sure how to update if I do. Also when updating to 11.3 do I just update through the system menu? Or have I gotta do it Another way?
Just follow this explanation:
Launch Luma Updater (you should have it installed if you followed Plailect's guide) and wait for it to load
Once loaded, select the "Install latest hourly ([hourly version])" option.
Wait until it's done and it will ask to reboot.
Next, open FBI
Select the SD option, and scroll down until you see "arm9loaderhax.bin" (make sure you don't select the backup which should have a ".bak" extension instead) and press A
Next, select the "Copy" option.
Press B to return to the main menu, then select the CTR NAND option.
It will ask if you are sure about modifying files in the CTR NAND, just say yes to that.
Next, select the "<current directory>" option, and select "Paste" afterwards.
You should now have Luma3DS on your NAND. To test this, try turning your 3DS on without the SD card inside

EDIT: After booting your 3DS without the SD card in, you will be prompted to the Luma3DS configuration menu. This is normal if you updated Luma3DS on your CTR NAND, or if it's the first time you test it out. It should only ask you once.

Black screen on boot with SD in, arm9loaderhax.bin was not in CTRNAND but updated version placed in anyway, didn't help, booting without SD card in merely boots in as normal, holding select/first boot doesn't cause Luna Configuration to appear.

Any ideas?

When was the last time you updated A9LH? If you updated a really long time ago, the it might be outdated, so it will not work.
Just follow this to update it: https://3ds.guide/updating-a9lh.html

I don't even have payloads it's just Luma folder with config.bin
Well, then it will obviously not work lol. Just download the latest release of it: https://github.com/d0k3/Hourglass9/releases
Then, inside of the ZIP file, you should have a "Hourglass9.bin" file. Just copy it to the folder "luma/payloads" folder. (if you don't have the folder payloads inside the luma folder just make one)

lol it's never straight forward with me :) sorry again but I made a folder in luma called payloads and put the Hourglass9.bin in there I've held start before pressing power button and pressed power button and held start straight after and still just booting up normal

Try renaming the payload to "start_Hourglass9.bin"

Luma doesn't have HBL right? Cause I think people are saying that HBL isn't working in 11.3
Nope, it's just because there is no payload to load HBL on 11.3 yet

Thanks, that seemed to be the problem, though now I'm stuck on the guide because the SafeA9LHInstaller sees firm1.bin as invalid or corrupted ~_~
