OK, don't hate me for this, but I tried out Ubuntu and while it's pretty solid, it can't playback videos (specifically .mkv's) as well as Windows with all the necessary codecs installed. Which, aside from gaming, is what I mainly use my PC for. So I want to uninstall Ubuntu, which I put on a separate hard drive. I tried doing it once before, but it fucked my computer because GRUB (I think) kept looking for Ubuntu or something, and when it couldn't find Ubuntu, it flipped out and wouldn't let me start my computer.

Can someone give me step-by-step instructions on how to remove Ubuntu from my computer and free up that hard drive so I can use it with Windows again?

Format the hard drive with Ubuntu on it.

Then, put in the Windows CD, go to the Repair function and do a /fixmbr and /fixboot. If you have Vista put in the Vista CD and simply do an automated repair. This will remove GRUB as a bootloader.

1. I don't know why, but after I installed Ubuntu onto that hard drive, it doesn't show up in My Computer (I'm running Vista, btw). How else can I format it?

2. Is there a way to do /fixmbr and /fixboot without using a Windows CD? I don't think I got one when I bought my computer. =/

It doesn't show up in My Computer because it's not a recognized file system to Windows. You can still format it by going to Control Panel > Computer Management > Disk Management. This will show all connected drives even those without a recognizable file system.

If you're running an OEM version of XP then you can try running this command in a command prompt window.

%windir%\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

and see if recovery console gets installed. You can apparently gain access to the recovery console by downloading the six floppy disk version of the Windows XP startup disk, too.

Nope, still no good. I can't figure out how to format the hard drive through the control panel (I can find the HD in the device manager section, but there's no option for format), and I don't think I got a Windows CD when I bought my computer (it came preinstalled with Vista).

Ask the maker of the computer to give you one. If they don't, they've just broken the law
