Tesco do make a loss on some games because they can make it back on people buying other things in store so you're wrong.
Are you pulling this out of your ass?

Supermarkets don't bump up the price like Game does because they aren't a specialist gaming store. They don't make a loss, they sell at RRP.

They do make a loss on some games because people aren't just going to go into a store to buy a game, they might buy other things as well.

Well if they don't make losses they certainly don't make any profit either.

Maybe if they competitively priced their shit instead of putting games like Mario Kart 7 at £37.98 they would still be around. Even Tesco is cheaper at launch for games.

That's because tesco can afford to make a loss on games.

Tesco doesn't take a loss on launch games, that doens't even make sense why they would do that. The only time a company would take a loss on a game is when they are trying to shift stock, they don't want to stock the game anymore due to it being old.

Er, uh...

Source please.

It's called loss leader, look it up.
I know what you're describing. Giving me the name of a business tactic is not evidence that Tesco is using it.

Actual source please.

That's with milk and bread etc they do that with small things, not games. It wouldn't make financial sense to take a loss on an expensive product like a game just so they can sell a loaf of bread. Also why do you think tesco have the same launch prices as lots of the online stores? do you think they are taking a cut too? I'm sorry but I'm not trying to annoy you in anyway but What you're saying frankly isn't true.

If you honestly think that video games, TV's, mobiles, microwaves, vacuum cleaners and all sorts of other stuff that's on Tesco's product list is in any way mentioned on people's everyday shopping lists then you must seriously be either very wealthy, very wasteful or you never do the shopping.

The idea of a supermarket is not "selling groceries and some other stuff", it's selling "everything at one place, so that you don't have to walk around town no matter what you want to purchase", hence the prefix super.

EDIT: Added another quote to avoid confusion.

"You" here is used to refer to the community in general, or to be specific, "everbody who thinks that way", especially sir Pyro. I didn't mean to prod you specifically in the side, I just tried to avoid a quote pyramid. ;)

My point is that when you go do the grocery shopping, you do the grocery shoping. When you go buy a TV, you buy a TV. When you go buy a game, you buy a game. Rarely do those mix, unless someone's thirsty after shopping or does the christmas shopping.

So yeah, Tesco and the like sell games at their ordinary retail price and then cut the price until they get rid of their stock to make space for new games.

Thank god they're gone, hopefully now that there's no dominant store some other smaller companies may be able to start expanding.
I doubt it, what we're seeing here looks just like the CD shops all over again; competitively priced internet sales killing off the high street stores. Small traders aren't going to fare much better.

This may actually have a negative impact on stores like CEX, who only deal in used goods.
A lot of their used games were probably those that came from the likes of GAME and Gamestation.

I'm less worried about that though, this means my brother's out of a job.
