So I didn't see this posted here

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-38583357

BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky (the big 4 isps) have signed up (voluntary scheme for now).

Basically, if your ip is caught torrenting you get a nice polite letter asking you not to & pointing you to legit stuff.

    From bbc

    "

Get It Right from a Genuine Site' has got in touch with us

Get it Right is a government-backed campaign acting for copyright owners who think their content's been shared without their permission.

"It looks like someone has been using your broadband to share copyrighted material (that means things like music, films, sport or books).

"And as your broadband provider, we have to let you know when this happens"

There are no consequences other than that, no limit to the amount you can recieve and no threats of being cut of or fines or anything really.

No details are passed on to anyone either.

All seems a bit weird, the "speculative invoicing" nonsense done nothing and made things worse, so now it's going to be a polite email asking users not to do it

It feels like this is just the first step before the government gets its act together to tact action on those "flagged" by this notice. Then they can say "We've sent notices at these dates, so they've had adequate warning before we start taking action against repeat offenders".

Of course, should things escalate any further than polite notices, that's when the shit hits the fan.

Even downloading images from google could be considered as piracy.
Then again, you got people who just download for fun.

I know someone who burned games to a DVD, made a cover and placed it on his shelf.
Only to rinse and repeat for the next 2000 games.

Oh, in Germany everybody "follows" the law. That must be the reason of the late flourishing of (torrent-user-promoting) paid VPNs.

We had something similar here in Sweden a while back. It was suspect as all hell, since they sent out threats and blackmails.
"You've downloaded pirated material! Pay us $500 or we will take you to court."

Some ISP here fought against that though, by sending a similar letters back to them. And not long after, they stopped. Everyone agrees that it was shady as hell.

It is allways very interesting to read these awesome things I never knew about Germany from someone whose flag says he is living in Argentinia oO

I don't use VPN and I am downloading stuff since like 23 years now ... never got a problem at all ...
than again I usually only use torrent for stuff like Anime that would not be released here anyways so there is probably no licence holder here who would sue me and use other ways for stuff like games even though I rarely download them at least if there is a Demo

The flag is from my land of birth, Argentina, yeah I got lazy never updated whatever, I like the colors better, <insert more excuses here>.
    I live in Germany.
I never got a problem personally, but I knew a guy that got such a letter and paid the fine.
I myself avoid torrents, but some neighbours suggested me to use VPN like they do.
AFAIK they send letters only for very mainstream things like hollywood movies.

was saying that cuz ISP are not the ones that deal with the copyright stuff...
they can fine you because you are using their service for achieve that bad stuff (however i do think they can't even fine you, they only had the autority to refuse the service)
in germany the letter didn't come from my isp.. it come from i don't remember if it was the company that had the rights to the movie i downloaded, or the ministry of entertainment or something like that (the same people who decide violent games in germany must be censored or banned)

the stupid thing is, i had been downloading for years, thousans of movies, and i only got a letter when downloading a movie that was owned a 50% part by a germany company..
i really suspect in the middle of the torrents was a "spy" seed.. i mean, the company that owns the rights in germany, is seeding, so they can grab the ip's of whoever is downloading, and then gotcha... a quick letter with IP and timestamp is sent to ISP asking who is that person, ISP answers, company sent a letter from his lawyers demanding a fine to the person who downloaded.

PS: the letter had the details of "what i downlaoded"
it had a table with timestamps and duration of download
in that letter only 4 minutes of downloading 1 movie that in a quick wikipedia search i could see a germany company also owned that movie (btw, movie IIRC took me 20 minutes download)
this is why i have that "spy seed" theory"...
at same time i was downloading 3-4 more movies and in the letter it didin't show up any information of that.

read my reply, it will help you.
you are very likely fine if you refrain from downlaoding stuff germany owns
so, if you download for example captain america, as long as a germany company doesn't own a share\part of that copyright, they don't give a damn

anime since it's japan, heh, they will most likely not care but i can be wrong

Oh no, these weren't sent by the ISPs, it was a stand alone anti piracy group.

And they had no evidence to back it up either, it was quite hilarious.

Torrentfreak reported on info that is posted on BT's website yesterday, now that is hilarious.

Loads of outdated & wrong information including talking about sites that haven't existed for ages, shows the ISP doesn't have a clue about it :)

Way our goverment is going with surveillance & censorship, it won't be long until we will be getting locked up for criticising the goverment, so may as well go down doing something entertaining :rofl2:.

Yeah, that was just the BPI I think. This is a new scheme that more are on board with (still voluntary for the isps to get on though).

We had those as well. No one gave a shit as they were from 3rd parties just hoping you would pay, same as there. Nothing ever came of it, and in the rubbish they went.

Well they've tried everything else, maybe saying please will help :rofl2:

They've removed a lot of the outdated stuff, their page is here for it incase anyone wants a look

    http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/int...y-have-i-had-an-email-about-it-11364136284839

Still not perfect (p2p automatically starting, sharing everything etc), but they did clear some of the errors.
