UGREEN 6-in-1 USB-C Hub Impressions

USB hubs have come a long way! I still remember when those were chunky extensions but with the likes of UGREEN’s modern model, these have been slimmed down to a pocketable size. It is not only slimmer but packs a stylish, premium look with its aluminium shell.

But is there still a need for such accessories? As a matter of fact, they might experience a resurgence given how laptops are getting slimmer with less ports themselves. The svelte design of UGREEN’s USB-C Hub makes it an attractive option with its low profile and pocketable aspect while expanding the ports available to your device.

The USB hub itself plugs to the main device via a USB-C port and I thus found it quite adequate for a portable PC like the AYANEO NEXT which bears only USB-C ports. But your device needs to have a USB-C port itself or else you won’t be able to use the hub at all. Having an option for a USB 3.0 port for those without USB-C ports would be welcome.

Once the UGREEN 6-in-1 USB-C Hub is plugged in, it offers support for the following ports:
  • 3 x USB 3.0 (up to 5Gbp/s)
  • 1 x HDMI (4K@60Hz)
  • 1x microSD slot (up to 104Mb/s)
  • 1x TF slot (up to 104Mb/s)
It should be noted that only devices with DP 1.4 port can achieve the 4K/60Hz HDMI video output; otherwise, you’ll have to be content with 1080p videos. But the number of ports that this compact accessory provides is definitely handy even if your device doesn’t have such a port.

Data transfer is otherwise swift and easy via USB 3.0 and microSD/TF slots. The results will vary depending on the storage device you use and its read/write speed. With my trusty (but ageing) 8 GB TOSHIBA USB stick that I use for simple file transfers, I managed to get 23.0 MByte/sec read and 3.0 MByte/sec write speeds through the UGREEN hub. On a more decent storage like my 32GB Kingston Canvas Select Plus Class 10 microSD that I use in my retro gaming devices, the read speed hit 85.9 MByte/sec while the write speed hit 28.3 MByte/sec. It’s slightly less than advertised but still within decent range.

While in use, the hub’s aluminium shell helps to keep the device cool and I haven’t encountered overheating issues with it.

Given that the device itself will occupy a USB-C port, it could have integrated a USB-C port to compensate but one isn’t integrated in this hub. Another handy inclusion would be an ethernet port but this is also absent in this hub. However, the pricier ($47) 7-in-1 hub counterpart from UGREEN comes with those extra ports which could be worth looking into.

Moreover, while it is portable, the USB-C cable isn’t detachable. Also, the integrated cable is rather short, and while it is suitable in most cases, a longer one (or being able to replace it with a longer one) would allow for more use cases/setups. As such, a detachable cable would have been a very welcome feature that I hope UGREEN will include in a future iteration.

With the $23 price tag on the official Amazon page, the asking price for the UGREEN 6-in-1 USB-C Hub is rather fair. It packs a premium build and delivers decent read/write speeds, even if it feels a bit lacking in some ports. I found it to be especially a great complimentary add-on to the AYANEO NEXT as it easily lets me use my other tech devices such as a mouse or SD card on the console or even extend the gaming experience to a larger screen via HDMI.

There might of course be cheaper options on the market but the UGREEN 6-in-1 USB-C Hub delivers a decent overall package at $23.

UGREEN is a solid brand overall. Typically inexpensive, well-built and reliable - downright an anomaly in this price range.

I've had great experience with these types of USB c hubs. If you get a version with ethernet and Power Delivery, you can have a laptop (or phone) docking station that only uses one cable. Be weary of the limited bandwidth since it isn't using thunderbolt.

I don't know anything about USB-C hubs, but i've been using UGREEN products for the last 4 years; a HDMI to VGA adapter for my nintendo switch dock so i could use it with an older 720p monitor, a USB to ethernet adapter for the switch dock too, and some other USB and jack 3.5 cables, never had any problem with any of their products.
Im not a fanboy, but unlike other brands i used, UGREEN has been able to provide good quality products, that don't fail after 3 days, and do what they promote, the adapters don't give problems (even the HDMI to VGA adapter doesnt have any noise, or delay, be it for the audio or the video output), the jack cables don't suffer from snapped connectors, and they are quite resistant, at the very least my cats are always trying to chew them and so far the cables barely have any scratch or deformation.
If they keep their quality with their hubs i will probably buy this one or the 7 ports version for the power delivery passthrough for the steam deck im planning to get.

Hi All, Enjoying my PC specialist Ionico Laptop. But i've come to realise I need more that the single USB C port it has on the back. Can anyone recommend a good hub that gives additional USB C ports. A lot seem to split to USB A and other additions. I just want to connect up a couple of USB C SSD's and I want to connect to my external monitor as well Currently to do this, I use a USB C to DP adaptor Thankyou
