OP
  1. spend an hour on trying to get the disc to spin up while the lid is open
  2. spend half an hour looking at how the disc spins up
  3. actually try to swap discs
  4. accidentally destroy the disc drive's ribbon cable in the process
  5. give up

How the heck can you screw up disc swapping that bad? Guess you could always stick to epsxe.
I didn't screw up THAT bad, but I did accidentally ram my finger into the ribbon cable, and then stopped to make sure the cable was ok. It worked just fine, but the disc swap didn't.

Anyway here's how I dick swap if you still can't get it working:
1) I wait for the original game to slow down and also wait for the drive to make a grunting sound
2) Swap out the discs for the pirated one, you don't have to be super quick, you just have to do it in less than 7 or so seconds while the spindle is still trying to find the disc
3) Let it spin again until the drive grunts again and swap the games again
4) Wait for the PlayStation logo to disappear and swap once more.
If you're still having problems, try burning the games again with ImgBurn (get an older version as the current one comes bundled with bloatware), and burn them at 4x speed or less. Also make sure you're burning the games on a non rewritable CD which is kinda a dumb thing to say.
