Hmm.
I am rather more than that, usually grew up in relatively poor places and the only reason anybody would have had a walkman was also because it was also a dictaphone. CD players were common as muck from about 2000 onwards (got me some 60 seconds read ahead in case it is jogged you know), being variously replaced with CD players that played MP3s and then MP3 players in earnest or ipods if you were a cretin.
Earlier than that we saw the rise of CD burners to go along with PS1 mod chips so decent chance people from that era only knew of a mix tape for your girlfriend because of elder siblings or cheesy films, instead it would be a mix CD.
