Feel free to come back and post whenever you find something new that's annoying.
Maybe people looking to build a site will read through this and see what NOT to do?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll start.

  • Sites that don't update shit on their first page. The first page is the first thing most visitors will see, and if you have something like THIS on it, people will assume the project died over a year ago and leave.

  • Sites that insert links with my clipboard via javascript. No "insert news site here", I do NOT appreciate you automatically inserting some text and a link back to your site into my clipboard whenever I copy any text on your site. Why in the hell would you even begin to think your visitors would enjoy that? I'm pretty sure that when Shigeru Miyamoto said that quote I copied, he didn't recite your page URL right after it!

I know it sounds shallow, but I hate when sites have mediocre, copy and paste template visuals. It just makes me so mad.

Sites that have audio ads playing by default... One of the biggest reasons I support Adblock Plus.

Excessive animations.

Required signup for forums to access a quick question.

Forums that won't let me use my gmail account.

Assume that I'm stealing if I ask about roms/game patch bypass.

Have ITT Tech ads. This goes for any and all for-profit schools. Especially annoying if site first asks me to drop ad-block, only to remind me why I'm in debt.

Sites that show an awesome piece of software (Chrono Trigger Resurrection) only to have the Take down notice on the download page.

Download sites where there is an ad with the text 'Download File' that instead leads to a million pop-ups.

Sites with a Captcha that resets if one letter off. Really annoying when it distorts the text to the point that only an AI could figure it out.

Sites that google shows as having an answer only to load it and it asks for premium membership before it will reveal the the answer, especially annoying in that I can't block it without logging into Google.

Yahoo, just Yahoo.

The iPod ad on any site.

Any site that has some d00d speaking in |337

Linux sites that claim to be newbie friendly and arn't. Replace Linux with all other OS'es

Linux sites that are as newbie friendly as they claim, only to fall short when things get complicated. Replace Linux with all other OS'es

I'll think of more later.

Sites with popup prompts.
Flash heavy sites (especially the ones with loading screens).
Ad-heavy sites (especially the ones with adult-targeted ads such as dieting, enlargements, relationship-finders, or just blatant porn)
Redirecting sites (sites that force you to be moved to another site, which often force you to yet another site, making the back-button useless).
Sites with l33t or intrnt spk - FTL.
Sites that want you to pay (primarily file hosting sites).
Sites that use 8-bit colour pallets (especially "yellow" and "skyblue").

Oh and, whilst it doesn't annoy me much, rick-roll sites should be added to the list.

Get a User Agent Switcher for your browser and set it to the google bot, then clear all cookies and turn acception of cookies off. Like magic, now YOU can see the same stuff google can (in most cases) without having to sign up.

Posters on forums who rely on "txt speak" all the time.

Sites that attempt to use buffer overruns in flash and other exploits to install toolbars and crap on your computer (that is one reason why I have flashblock and adblock plus)

Sites that require you to register before doing even the most basic things.

Popups you can't close without using kill-9 or terminate process to forcibly shut down the entire browser and risking losing all your bookmarks due to not shutting the browser down cleanly.

  • Sites with auto-playing audio and video such as this one. It's even worse when there's no way to mute it or when they put the auto-playing audio/video player at the very bottom of the site or some other place which makes it hard to find.
  • Sites with pop-up ads although that isn't so much of a problem since I have AdBlock installed.

Oh nice, now the site raping will begin! Muhahahahahah!

---

Here's one that bothers me. When I do a Save-Shutdown with Firefox then turn it back on if any of the windows was YouTube the video will start playing. This is compounded by the number of YouTube windows opened. Imagine ten videos running at the same time.

Something else that bothers me is Share Ratio on torrent sites. Their just not accurate when accounting for uploads. But every single byte downloaded is displayed in real time.

While not very noticeable, I hate it when a site uses several different CSS files that all do roughly the same thing.

Trolls...

MySQL for tasks that would be better suited with a txt file or heaven forbid, a mdb file. The reverse is also true. Using a clear type txt file to store passwords is just plain stupid.

---

Shame this topic dosne't cover computer quarks that drive me nuts, like how MS put hardlinks into the NTFS specification but then short of using makelink or fstools there isn't a convenient way to use them. I had to write my own program since Total Commander refuses to integrate the shell into their right click menu.

The screen jerks up and down while it's loading and you accidentally click on a wrong link. (this might be a browser issue but sites can help by being lightweight)

Oh yeah, can't believe I forgot this: "Congratulations, you won!", that's the worst thing ever.

-Require you to disable AdBlock Plus to access the site
-Survey things that can't be disabled with noscript
-Pop-up ads that aren't blocked by adblock plus (I'm talking about you, Megaupload)
-The menu is coded in such a way that AdBlock Plus disables it, and there's no other way to navigate the site
-Poorly coded templates that run slower than a fish on land
-Sites with download links that you SHOULD NOT click without first donating, but you can click it and download from that link anyway even if you don't donate
-"REGISTER TO SEE THIS MESSAGE!" You register. "I'M SORRY, THIS MESSAGE WAS DELETED."
-The spot under ads says something like "You've blocked this ad! Turn adblocker off now or donate so this site doesn't die!"
-Facebook's page like suggestions. Say you list yourself as engaged. You'll get suggested couples counseling and wedding planning. You list yourself as married. You get suggested pregnancy test stuff and divorce.
-No mobile version
-If it's a forum, mobile version doesn't allow replying or making topics
-Site was linked from a youtube profile you like a lot. Site is supposed to be homepage of that youtube profile. Site has nothing to do with the youtube profile, despite being advertised as such.
-Have so much stuff on it that it freezes the browser

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
