Switzerland’s government has pushed through legislation that may eventually see a ban put on the sale of violent videogames.

Late last year, the government passed legislation making the PEGI ratings mandatory, with a second amendment that threatened to ban the production and sale of mature games outright.

The two motions passed will likely make it illegal to sell or make a game with a PEGI rating of 16+ and 18+. According to reports by GamesMarket.de, the motion itself carries no legal implications but those are to be hashed by the government out following its successful passing.

The motion allows for a ban on the “manufacture, touting, importation, sale and distribution of game program... in which cruel acts of violence against humans and human-like creatures” occurs.

That's just stupid.

I feel sorry for gamers in Switzerland. What the heck do those politicians have against violent games? They haven't been the result of any problems. You mind as well ban violent movies.

They need to read Stephen King's "Why We Crave Horror Movies", I think that might change a lot of minds over. Seriously if you don't have the cause and effect of what you might be doing then you never know if you might end up making a situation worse.

Go Switzerland, tell those legal adults what they can and cannot think! Freedom? Pff, overrated anyways.

We need thoughtpolice and laws regulating -everything- you do, say and think.

I can't even post my usual comment here. It's normally along the lines of 'like politicians are in any position to lecture us about violence'. But this is the Swiss, they're not exactly the most bloodthirsty warlords the world has ever seen.

But seriously. This is kinda pathetic. Let people play what they want. I dunno about you guys but when I've had a terrible day and really feel like breaking someone's nose, a little violent media such as a few rounds on my preferred online shooter or a few bouts on Tekken allow me to vent my rage without having to give anyone a dolphin-style blowhole in their face with an ice pick.

I am of course joking, I don't even have an ice pick. But you know what I mean. We've all had crappy days when we've wanted to punch our bosses or something. Would you rather I punched my boss in the face or punched a created character on Soul Calibur that looks like him?

EDIT: Wait a damn minute! They want to ban 16+ games too?! Bull-fucking-shit. 18+ I can maybe understand for some of them, but 16+ is so pussified these days that it's hardly worth mentioning. What does that leave them with? The 'Imagine' series on DS. Which frankly is more offensive to gamers and humanity as a whole than any blood and gore fest. Not to mention they kill off more brain cells than a Gears of War curb stomp.

switzerland is an area for peace and vacation (and banks) so violence is not tolerated...
maybe they got the idea from aussies and thought it to be important
i say ban porn, its more dangerous (and obscure) than violence though violence does affect the kids greatly (porn does worse)

What they are doing seems hypocritical to me,I mean they wanna ban violent games but what about dirty/adult games? Are they not also banned? So they don't care if those kinda games were to get into the hands of children?Hypocrites, but then again, thats what politicians are.

QUOTEthats just dumb people can easily just order games from other countries people will still play violent games so banning them isnt really doing anything...

lol,Do you also mean pirating?
smile.gif
Cuz they can just do that too,I mean, thats what I would do...

These are bigger wusses than the Australian Government, even Australia will allow violent games as long as it's suitable for a 15 year old.

That sounds a little heavy handed. There's been this progressive movement away from personal freedom and responsibility in favor of government knows whats best for you. Reminds me of the censorship that was done away with in the 70's
