It was dumbed down for the masses, they mean the same thing. When the global atmosphere warms, it causes every sort of natural disaster to become both more frequent and more violent. Severe hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards are all very cold, but they're caused by global warming.

This isn't a movie where wishful thinking will suddenly become reality, climate change is already having a huge impact on tons of peoples' lives globally. Refusing to acknowledge it won't save anyone from it, but working to address its root causes now just might.
