Wii U was bad because it's nonsense of a name. Switch 2 is bad because it's bland and generic. It won't cause a marketing disaster like Wii U naming did, but it's so boring.

Takes DS for example, which was superseded by 3DS. Genius, simply brilliant. Gameboy, followed by color and advance? Lyrical, yet to the point.

You know what we should call Switch 2 instead? Double Switch. Hire me, nintendo.

Seems like Nintendo has lost some creativity, like they couldn't think of a better name so they just went with 2.

I mean they've never in their history called a console or handheld 2. There was 2DS but that was just a different version of the 3DS not a sequel.

But honestly I don't really care, just show me the good games and I'll be fine.

Switch 2: Electric Switcharoo.

It's a good name from a marketing standpoint because it's self-explanatory to anyone who has heard of a Switch. Says everything you need to know about the console. It's fine.

Nobody is riding Sony's ass about "PlayStation".

People will find reasons to rant about pretty much everything.

I'm fine with a simple 2 if that's what it takes to keep uninformed parents from getting confused. However, I'm sure there will be some who'll mistake "For Christmas I want a Switch 2" for "For Christmas I want a Switch, too."

This. I'm happy Nintendo kept the "Wii U problem" in mind. It was fascinating because I'm not concerned about the Switch or Nintendo, but the business side of me really didn't know if they'd learned their lesson.

it was like watching a competition on TV. You don't win anything, but you want the contestant to avoid easy mistakes.

I was concerned until the official announcement, which shows how much faith I have in Nintendo's executives. A snappy name would have been nice, but the Switch 2 likely has minimal gimmicks to keep it as marketable as its predecessor. The name is works, fortunately and unfortunately.

I disagree. "Double Switch" sounds like you get two of them for the price of one. "Where's my second Switch?"
It's like the proposed "Switch Attach." It sounds like it attached to the existing Switch. "Why do I need to pay so much for this attachment?"

I can see why they settled.

Switch 2 is perfect. Any other name would have suffered the same confusion problem as the Wii U or DSi. As the system it just the same but a bit better, you need customers to know its different and not just some gimic to sell more of the original copnsole.

Super Switch or Switch Advance would have worked perfectly
They just played ultra safe because they're bitches traumatized
I'd argue that they were thinking beyond the Switch 2. The Switch 2 could very well lead the way to the Switch 3 and 4.

They just cannot experiment right now because another Wii U could sink them. They do have secondary markets, like movie(s) and merchandise, but they don't have a handheld market anymore.

Switch 3 and 4? Jesus fuck, no...
The Switch has been out for almost 8 years at this point and the Switch 2 will most likely cover for another 8 years.

After more than a decade and a half of the same concept, Nintendo should try something different...

Now, here's the question: Would you rather live in a world with no new Nintendo consoles or a world where Nintendo continues to be successful using the same overall console design?

I'm sure Nintendo would go third-party if they truly had to because being in business is better than abandoning or selling a ton of well-established IP's. I think they've threatened to leave the video game business entirely, if they didn't make consoles, but that's not realistic.

After the Wii U and knowing people IRL who thought the Wii U was an addon....I don't blame them for going with a safe choice.
Mmmm... That is a fair point. It feels like the Wii U was sooooo long ago, but before the Switch 2, that was their last attempt at naming a home console successor.

I don't feel the Wii U did poorly due to the name. Not one, single, person I know thought it was just an add-on, Wii 1.5, or anything of the sort. Everyone I know in person and have ever spoken with knew full well it was an entirely new console. Imo it did poorly due to lack of games.
