So I just came back from vacation and I decide to try out my then unopened 360 elite. Immediately, I receive three red rings. However, after waiting a while,
I come back and the starts normally. It has been fine so far, but does anyone have an explanation for this? Forgot to add, I did have the package in my luggage.

RROD isnt always over heating, its general hardware failure... which isn't good, get a replacement at a store.

One of the most frequent non-permanent RROD is power problem. They can range from electrical surge to contact being loose.
I guess your console could have picked up some charges from static electricity, 360's ground isn't a true ground AFAIK.

This is true, whenever I get a power surge at home my 360 shuts down and starts flashing the 3 reg rings.

Just a reboot and everything is normal again, hopefully this is what happened to you.
