Hacking status of loading backups from SD on usbloadergx?

I've read that usbloadergx can't load Wii backups from an SD card. But I also saw a few newer threads where people swear it worked for them. What's the official word as of today? I'd really like to get rid of that SSD hanging off the back. I know Wiiflow and CFGusbloader can both play from SD but I've tried them both and I'd rather have the SSD hanging off the back than deal with their interfaces.

Not really, it is very possible and I think it won't be too difficult but no one is going to implement the feature - the Wii scene is mostly dead

SSDs aren't that expensive and cheaper than having to keep replacing external hard drives.

just do what I did and get a micro sd card and a micro sd to usb adapter, or do whatr you want to do.

That kind of defeats the purpose of what I'm trying to do. Having an SD to USB adapter hanging out of the USB port isn't any different than than having the SSD I already hanging out of the USB port.
