"Star Fox 64" is getting a native PC port

Another beloved classic from the 5th Generation of videogame consoles is getting a native PC port. This time, the famous on-rails shooter for the Nintendo 64, Star Fox 64 (or Lylat Wars depending on the region), is getting a proper PC port made by the same developers that brought Ocarina of TIme to PC.

"Starship" is the codename given to the PC port of the game, made by the same people behind the Ship of Harkinian, specifically Sonic Dreamcaster and Samplywx, since they were the ones who worked on this specific PC port of Star Fox 64. The developers from Ship of Harkinian are now going by the name of Harbour Masters 64, and a few days ago, speedrunner Rakanai livestreamed a complete run of the game showcasing a beta of the native PC port, and while Titania had some bugs and glitches, those issues are expected to be resolved in due time.

The pros from the Ocarina of Time PC (Ship of Harkinian) port could apply to Star Fox 64 as well, with the expected 60 fps without speedup glitches tied to animations, proper widescreen and even ultra wide support, higher resolutions, support for mods and even a fanmade remaster are within possibilities once the PC port is finally available.

While the PC port of Star Fox 64 still doesn't have a final release date, the team are expecting a proper build of the game to be available on December for users to play. Those interested in playing the PC port, remember that you will be required to provide your own dump of Star Fox 64 in order to create the PC build.

Nintendo: famously hoards star fox 2 for 22 years
Also, Nintendo: *makes star fox zero mandate motion controls*
Miyamoto: "uhh, how come this isn't franchising? Idk what to do with it"
Fans: infinitygauntlet(dot)exe "Fine, ill do it myself"
Miyamoto: brain damaged screeching "No, that's not how you're supposed to play the game!"

Currently i have Star Fox 64 3D with Citra in my Launchbox. Not sure if ill switch to this, but its cool I guess.

That's so cool !

I wonder if they're going to be able to release support for mods/texture packs soon, because they made it for OoT so maybe it's easier on other ports as well ?

If the Port supports replacing textures and models, it will be possible to leave the graphics and audio the same as the 3DS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be a 3rd person shoot em up? It can't be a rail shooter, you can control the characters/ships movement.
In rail shooters, you're bound to a rail like you're in a cart, and the only way to change the path is to shoot different things, right?

"The original Star Fox (1993) further popularized rail shooters, adding 3D graphics."

"Star Fox 64 was released in 1997 and gained wide renown for its graphics, level design and non-linearity.[1] It was the last primarily rail shooter Star Fox game, with Nintendo switching to a fully 3D range of movement going forwards.[1]"

Most games of the genre translates that to the reticle alone, but some also give you the freedom to move around the viewport while the game take you on a predetermined path like Star Fox, a similar example would be Sin and Punishment.

yaaaay, i can't fucking wait to play basically the same game i would have been playing on my totally real SNES for ever but this time with shitty interpolation to give the illusion of 60 FPS (it'll still be 20 FPS under the hood so enjoy suffering)

Now that all these native ports are possible, have to wonder if Nintendo will one day bring NSO to PC and mobile. That would be wild if they did and it had online multiplayer.

starfox 64 is truly a timeless classic.
I really why nintendo mishandled that franchise so much.

Because Rare is no longer making the games. They literally made Starfox 1, 2 and 64.

Like Nintendo was so lazy with the story the N64 game is basically a remake of the first game.

Rare was involved with Starfox Adventures, but only because Shiggy demanded they made Dinosuar Planet into a Star Fox game. Argunaut Games was the ones made the original and the sequel Nintendo canned, unless you have some groundbreaking proof that Greg Mayles and his crew of british game developers actually made the SuperFX chip while Grant Kirkhope made some snazzy tunes in the background and definitively proved that Argunaut is a hack-fraud.

You don't have to.

Announcing things ahead of time always seems like a bad idea when it comes to NIntendo fangames, romhacks or whatever.

This game should be simple to upscale. The graphics are very simple, with mostly static skyboxes and reused asteroid assets and enemies. But it has some nice looking skyboxes (especially for the time) that with a little work could look even better, and there is already Star Fox 64 3D to pull improved textures and models from. Can't wait to see some HD textures for it.

I wonder if this PC port will be allowed to be used for Speedrunners since its so much faster? Yes, as it's own category obviously :P

I just love how smooth and lagfree it is. These decomps been amazing!

For the hundredth time, they can't do anything about these ports
like they couldn't do anything about the botw randomzier MOD eh? you really have no clue just what nintendo are like now they can and will take these down if they want to be it mod or port it won't matter they make the rules. and there won't be a damn thing any of you will be able to do about it.
