Hacking Sony's response with future games

I sincerely hope you're wrong. Pseudo or real DRM is not the answer to piracy. PC has too much of that already and it's caused any number of problems for both sides in the past (not to mention failing to actually prevent software crackers from doing what they do best).

Well, it's the same concept as using a key to set up an account of WoW. I don't like it either but other than things like Steam, it's what has been most the most effective and efficient solution rather than millions spent on [largel failed] anti-piracy. I just hope and pray they don't go the route of enforced online activation. I don't always have a steady access to the internet and that'd kill any interest I had in buying any games from them again.

The mark-up on consoles compared to games is minimal. People buying ps3s just to pirate is the last thing Sony wants. The only reason it can sell the consoles at the price it does is the assumption that people will buy several games to play on it over its life, in the same way that companies sell cheap printers to make money selling ink or will give you an iphone for nothing to sell you calls for a year.

The American military bought a few hundred PS3s and hooked them up to a big network to create a makeshift supercomputer. Apparantly it uses around 40% of the energy the equivolent in PC uses to achieve the same level of overall processing power.

It's inevitable that wannabe pirates will end up buying lots more consoles. Even I'm considering buying an extra one sometime so I can pirate with one and maintain my top scores in LBP with the other.

I doubt this would happen at all for reasons already mentioned, and the fact that 360's are hacked on the dvd drive firmware level as well as being plenty of Jtagable consoles floating around.
The same reason they won't go over to the wii or pc, even though i feel the need to point out most dev's don't stop development just because of piracy in general or just because a console is hacked into, they stand to loose to much that way.

The only aspect that I can think of where piracy has actually helped the games industry, is in console sales. One of the reasons why the Wii sells so well is because it's so easy to hack and pirate games off. There are also many people who, after getting banned by Microsoft, just went out and bought a new Xbox 360.

I'm guessing there'll be a 30-60% rise in PS3 sales as a result of the hack, especially since it's now been mentioned in newspapers worldwide. We're already seeing enough new threads of "I'm thinking of/already have bought a PS3, and want to know how to play backups".

Not to mention the player base for all the games will increase dramatically with people actually playing PS3 games vs not buying a PS3.

I think some people are over-estimating the size of the community. Sure: people will be playing pirated games and Sony will lose some sales because of it, but by no means will this prematurily end the lifecycle of the PS3.

Look at it like this. Tons of people I know wouldn't even screw open their computer themselves to install a new hdd (and opt instead to buy a new computer just for the sake of a bigger hdd). I know people who pay for itunes because they fear they'll get a virus when they download from torrent sites. There are a lot of people who shiver at the sound of hacking a console, because they lose their warranty. The majority of the world is too un=knowledgable about computers and the like to ever pirate, and that's Sony's redemption. And that's why it's, like, cool to be us.

Installing cfw is a niche-thing, it's something only a small group of people will do - it's definitely not mainstream. And if above doesn't make any sense, I refer to the original PSX instead - it was amazingly easy to trick the machine into playing backups, yet it became one of the best selling consoles ever.

So Sony will be fine, and I don't see why they should rush the PS4.

You underestimate the number of people who have been waiting a long time to pirate on PS3. PS3 is the most expensive games console. The games are the most expensive (new releases cost anywhere from £35-60). The graphics are also the most awesome (bar PC) and you don't have to pay for online pay (although online play isn't exactly encouraged when pirating). If they can get access to all those awesome games for free, £200 wouldn't seem like quite so much. Compared to a couple of friends who have sunk over £1000 in PS3, accessories, games and DLC...

Then again, how many games on PS3 are there that I really want to play, that I don't already have on PC or 360? Not very many, and Kinect/Move have a rather phailsome line of games so far... in any case, that's the only reason why I haven't started pirating on PS3 yet. The games I really wanted, I already bought, and the games I'm not sure about I can live without.

Btw, a lot of people have come to me to get their Wii/360/PSP hacked over the years. It's only a matter of time until those same people come to me for the PS3 too.

Fingers crossed! Sony knows the PS3 from inside out, so hopefully there is at least ONE solution.

correct me if i am wrong or looking/thinking at this the wrong way... but if they knew it inside out really why would they have let this random number generator result in the same number every time pass through the cracks?

Like I said: obviously people will hack it and Sony will lose money, but it won't kill the console to the extend that it forces Sony to push the PS4 to Q4. You mention the Wii as an example, and indeed, it's childishly easy to hack. Nevertheless games like Mario Galaxy and the new Michael Jackson sell millions of copies. The fact that some of those copies are pirated is inconvenient at most.

In my experience, pirates usually fall into two categories: can't pay, and won't pay. There's a third category, namely the economic pirates. Those are the people who pirate the latest releases simply because it's cheaper, but that group is significantly smaller. I have heard of people who will buy a PS3 now that it's hacked, and those ppl typically belong to the can't pay/won't pay-group. Sony won't like them, but they're not losing money simply because if there was no hack they wouldn't buy a console in the first place.

It's like the music industry claiming that every cd downloaded is a cd not sold - when I look at my 250 gig mp3-collection I know that this isn't true: there are a lot of albums on there I never would've bought.

Hmm you wouldn't pay for them yet you're happy keeping them downloaded to listen to...

I like how this thread is filled with people who think they are experienced to talk about this sort of thing. Truth is no one knows what will happen with any certainty.

i was one of the people that would have never bought a ps3, i just bought one last month for one reason and one reason only, the same reason i own a wii/ds/ngc/sdc...i also have a buttload of pirated mp3s, because i like to listen to music while im on my computer, but only a small fraction of those cds, i actually have a copy of, around 50 cds, you want my hard earned money, stop selling me crap

So you keep all the mp3s even though you believe they're crap... why?

I have a rather large collection of downloaded MP3s too. Only 1/10th of them came from legally owned CDs, because the majority of it is Japanese and imports tend to cost £40+. Considering that I usually only pay £4-8 for a CD, I think I'm justified.

For games, I fall into all three catagories. I take the "try before you buy" philosophy to pirating - download games, play them, if I like them I add them to a list of games to look for (when they're not so expensive). If I don't like them, I won't buy them. Unfortunately there's no way an ex-student like me can afford to buy most of the games I want to.

I still have a bookcase full of legally owned games though, and my Steam list is fairly sizeable.

Piracy is the least of sony's problems.
You can run anything you want so you will see Ps3 running windows and mac os. Microsoft will then also start having bricks comming out of their rear. If I was sony (obvously im not) i'd humble myself and start over with a new non backward compatible console.

they could use a similar serial key system like PC games, or start charging for playing online like xboxlive, people wont like it but its an option.

PS3 running Windows? That actually sounds rather interesting. Not that Windows is an ideal OS, but putting Steam on PS3 and playing PC games on PS3.....

That most likely will never happen. That would mean the PS3 will have to run Windows (This will be the largest undertaking), run Steam, and at the same time run the game of choice which the PS3 most likely will not meet the minimum requirements.

It has been said multiple times, Consoles != PCs
