Of course, they're going to lump together "piracy" and "cheating" with "homebrew".

You need a homebrew scene before you can say you're hacking a console to play homebrew on it. The PS3 doesn't have one, at least not one that's actually any good. Just checking any websites that provide PS3 homebrew is evidence enough - there's nothing besides "homebrew" that reverts PS3s to older firmwares, backup managers, methods for accessing game updates and DLC without using PSN, get other people's PS3s banned by pretending that your PS3 has the same System ID... I could go on, really, but what's the point? The "homebrew" scene on the PS3 isn't exactly what I'd call brimming with awesome games and applications.

Anyone who says they're hacking their PS3 just to play homebrew is lying through their teeth. Does anyone on this site buy flashcarts for their DS just to play StillAlive DS? Didn't think so. Piracy and cheating are the main reasons for hacking any console and the PS3 is no different - trying to act like it is really just gives certain kinds of people an excuse to use.

So yeah, please give me a good reason why Sony shouldn't lump piracy and cheating together with "homebrew".

(at least not with the geohot case) because geo never released the NDRPM keys and therefore ONLY allowed homebrew.

And the PS3 IS getting some cool emulators/apps. Scene liveliness is nowhere near that of what it is for the PSP or Wii and Absolutely nowhere near where it was when the first Xbox was hacked, but it's there.

I use homebrew for many things on the ps3. There is more than backup managers, psn bypass (Which I don't even use), and going back to older firmware. There's lots of emulators that are used and are updated. There are games being made or ported to it like doom and heritc and other such things. Linux is also coming back as well, which I even use.

Don't go around saying that people only hacked there ps3 to only pirate, because there are people out there that do use backups and don't just pirate the system. If people want to hack it, they are going to do more with it than just pirate.

Emulators.

Which run... pirated games.

And there are emulators for the ds, wii, psp, and 360. That are being used to play the old console games.

Yeah but Nintendo doesn't get money from NES games anymore. When you're talking about ROMS for older systems, its all a matter of copyright. Doesn't make it right, but Nintendo can't make money off those games anymore. Just wanted to throw that out there. VC doesn't count because thats on a whole different system.

There are several good non port homebrew games.

Cubicle Shooter
Pongus sort of rip off of Pong though....
Breakout X not that good to me but others might like it

and also several useful apps that don't do backups such as Linux something adding linux back.

That's very true. They don't make revenue on those games anymore.

Unless a game has been released to the public domain (I'm not sure if any games have been yet), if you download it illegally, you're pirating it. Doesn't matter if it's Radiant Historia (which was just a recent release) or Super Mario Bros., if you obtained it illegally then it's illegal.

Virtual Console is still banking off their old NES games so technically they're still making money off NES games.

Virtual console on Wii and soon to be 3DS would bring in revenue for many of those ROMs....damnit....didn't see Guild's post!

It's still piracy, regardless.
Nintendo has a VC for the Wii. They can still make money off those games.

I know that. It's just that I don't think playing old games on emulators is bad. Now playing new games that they actually make money off of, that is bad.

Exactly. And we all don't own Wii's and to my knowledge ps3 doesn't have the VC. Well, we're getting off topic. I think we can all agree that pirating games is bad.

doesnt Sony own securerom DRM on PC? Guess that didnt work out lol. I think this is also a sign that show Sony is seriously about 10 years life cycle for PS3 or they won't even bother with it like PSP now. This also help them on future hardware I suppose.

True to that.

On topic: I wonder how this program will work. Specifically who's getting hired.

Does Sony really want customers so bad?

They are just fucking with their name.
They're only driving them away, by making them not buying their consoles.

any publicity is good publicity
