Hardware So, whatever happened with the Hori Joycon w/ Dpad??

They were supposed to 'hit' over the summer, but then I think I read there was some issue with them in Japan (where they were released first). You can buy the (J) ones on Amazon, but I'm not inclined to and would rather wait until I know Hori sorted it out. Actually, I'd be a lot happier if Nintendo made us an official d-padded left joycon. But what's going on with the Hori? Is it still gonna happen?

You poweroff completely or you remove the left joycon.

Personally I dont see the purpose of staying on low firmware, autorcm and a dongle are really convenient if you want to keep your fuses low.

There is no HD rumble, no SR/SL buttons (the little shoulder buttons in split screen table top mode), no infrared, no battery, and it only works when attached to the screen in handheld mode.

Seems like a waste..

If you're happy with it only being for handheld mode, the only other part of that that's relevant is the no HD rumble. The left joy-con doesn't have infrared anyway.

Personally I preferred to get an extra official joy-con and put it in a d-pad case, but the Hori is a simpler and probably cheaper option if you can live without the hd rumble.

Anyone looking for a full joycon d-pad solution, I've been keeping my eyes on these: Collective Minds D-grips Basically silicone covers for your joycons that includes a plastic d-pad covering the directional buttons.

Seen them listed on Amazon for at least a month but they aren't available for purchase there. Only on their official website and just recently. I'm wondering how the feel compares to the basstop shells, having space to press on the diagonals is promising and they are far less trouble to install, but the low price has me worried. Haven't been able to find any reviews out there yet.

Just swap out your shell for a dpad one. It will be 100x better than the garbage Hori joycons missing half the functionality of a regular joycon.

Do you know how difficult it is to swap out the Joycon shell? I am quiet good with these sort of things but never attempted this and see you know how to looking at your impressive Etsy shop. I would love to buy a set off you but can't really afford it atm so was going to try it myself with my joycons if you care to share some tips?

It's fiddly and involved, but it's definitely doable if you've got average dexterity and plenty of patience.

I've done two now, I just followed along with this video, pausing constantly.

Take your time, have patience. The first set I did, my own, took me about 5 hours over the course of 2 days. Honestly not much to it other than that. There are hundreds of "how-to" videos.

Advice given above is perfect, follow along with the video, pause when needed.

i have both the hori dpad joycon and the shell dpad mod(branded basstop or myriann or whatever). neither is that great. the shell mod has no pivot so it doesnt roll like a real dpad. the only good thing is that my thumb doesnt get scratched when rolling between directions as happens when playing with separate buttons. hori dpad has a tall pivot and the buttons are deep. when pressung near the center it's not accurate so i often misinput diagonals when trying to just go left or right. and the deep buttons make it more strenuous to repeatedly roll between left and right. i am still looking for something that feels like the 3ds dpad or the xbox one dpad.
incidentally in handheld mode the right joycon transmits the vibration to the left so the left hand vibrates as well. the problem is when a game only uses the left joycon to vibrate like skyrim lockpicking.
