the rumor about the removal of recovery mode has been confirmed false

there is many reports of ps3's which had cfw 3.55 (any ver) and upgraded straight to 3.56, are now bricked
many people are urging to reinstall 3.55 ofw from the recovery menu and wipe everything if you plan to go to 3.56 ofw


there is also a rumor circulating that 3.56 disables the ability to install fw updates from external memory
only game discs and psn are the only way to obtain fw updates now
its not confirmed yet

Just trolling, both update via external device/recovery mode are still working at 3.56.

This is fascinating: I just downloaded a new update PUP from sony and tested it on my non-hacked 3.55 system. It shows up as 3.55 and asks me if I want to update! (It should say "no need to update, already have current firmware). Suspiciously, I checked the MD5 against a 3.55 PUP I downloaded a few days ago --they don't match! Sony is being really

here methinks!

Edit: Nevermind, I accidentally compared the wrong file on my desktop (it's a mess!) Sorry. It's still 3.55 OFW, but I can't figure why my PS3 would still let me update to the same firmware.

Ran wipe history
Deleted all homebrew
Reinstalled 3.55 OFW from recovery menu
Formatted the hard drive
Reset settings to default

I'm sure not all of these things were necessary, but better safe than sorry

Now I'm installing the 3.56 update
We'll see how this goes...

My roommate also modded his PS3, so we decided to use mine for online games and his for homebrew.

EDIT: My PS3 was on kmeaw's CFW and my bro updated it straight to 3.56 without reverting the system back or anything (He didn't even know I installed CFW on it). My console did not brick.
