So basically if you want a Sonic 3D collection, buy a PS3.

If you have a PS3, you can get:

Sonic adventure 1 (available on PSN)
Sonic adventure 2 (available on PSN)
Sonic heroes (PS2 version, which is playable on PS3)
Shadow the hedgehog (PS2 version, playable on PS3)
Sonic 06 (don't know why'd you want this, but it's there)
Sonic unleashed (PS3 version is best version of the game)
Sonic generations
Sonic 4 episode 1 (PSN)
Sonic 4 episode 2 (PSN)

The only game missing is Sonic colors. Which will be on the switch in september. Not a bad deal. But a collection would have been better.

That's not bad at all. I forgot how many Sonic games were on the PS3. Sonic Heroes on the PS2 is the worst version, sadly, but it's not terrible overall.

Or better yet, a hacked out Wii U

(Via Nintendont)
Sonic Adventure 1 DX
Sonic adventure 2 Battle
Sonic Heroes
Shadow the Hedgehog

(Via backwards Wii compatability)
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Sonic and the Black Knight
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Colors
Sonic 4 episode 1

(Native Wii U games)
Sonic Lost World
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Seems you get a bigger selection of 3D Sonics on a (hacked) Wii U. (Side note: I'm not sure Sonic 4 really counts as a 3D Sonic game, yeah Sonic has a 3D model, but it's still a 2.5D experience, much like the Sonic Rush and Sonic Colors games on DS. But I digress.)

Honestly I doubt I could even find a PS3 that's backwards compatible with PS2 games that I'd be willing to shell out for. I've got almost all the 3D Sonic games on Steam( minus Forces for obvious reasons ), and trying to complete my collection of physical discs for Sonic Wii games since I do want to play Unleashed and Black Knight( Secret Rings not a priority ).

I assume we're talking consoles only, more often than not, PC is the best answer, and that's just a given, so the question becomes what dedicated gaming console becomes the best choice instead?

It would be a toss up between the Wii U and PS3 I think, depending on how you can settle with the PS2 games or Sonic Unleashed. Comparing both provided lists there would be

Playstation 3:
  • SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2006)
  • Sonic Unleashed (HD)
  • Sonic Generations
  • Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 2
Wii U:
  • Sonic and the Secret Rings
  • Sonic and the Black Knight
  • Sonic Colors
  • Sonic Lost World
  • Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric
Shared:
  • Sonic Adventure (DX)
  • Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle)
  • Sonic Heroes
  • Shadow the Hedgehog
  • Sonic Unleashed (SD)
  • Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1
I think it's more likely to lean on the PS3 library if you're not using a PC. But I will add that mod support is pretty important in these games to where I think it would makes these not too worth it.

The SA2 demo (on PS3) for me is more than enough as I only really enjoyed the first stage, but I did buy it on the 360.

I'll give the Xbox some love also, as it actually has all the Sonic games I've enjoyed.

Xbox 360 / One / Series:

3D:
  • Sonic Adventure
  • Sonic Adventure 2
  • Sonic Generations
2D:
  • Sonic
  • Sonic 2
  • Sonic 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles
  • Sonic CD
  • Sonic Mania (Only one not on the 360)

How would you play Sonic Unleashed and 06 on PC?

Sonic Unleashed has the WiiS2 version or wait for the PS3/360 emulation to improve.

06….well you could get the same experience by playing the soundtrack whilst reading bad fan fiction, bashing yourself on the head repeatedly with the controller and as in my case having very little sleep because you just want to be done with this thing.
