Hardware SLC Corruption help request

Hello All, Apologizes if this is the incorrect place to make this post

I am currently in the process of attempting to fix my bricked Wii U and could use some advice or aid.

I believe my issue is SLC corruption, and have followed the guide in the Ultimate Wii U Troubleshooting guide as far as I can go, but I have reached a roadblock.

The nandBinCheck identified a bad HMAC file, but did not show a path to a specific file other than the "/scfm.img" file. I believe this means that the fix used in the SLC thread will not work for my situation.
I lack the understanding of Nintendo's systems and community made tools to be certain however, hence why I am making this thread. What are my next steps?

I did attempt the fix stated in the SLC thread, but it didn't work and might have made things worse.

I will also include any and all information I believe will be useful to anyone attempting to help. Thanks in advance.

I did not, I that first zip you sent there were two files, I believed those analogous to the boot0.img and fw.img files in the standard setup for de_fuse. so I flashed the boot1-memtest-0.img file to the sd card and placed the boot1-memtest-f.img file in the sd card like you would with the fw.img file.

The second time I just replaced the boot1-memtest-f.img file with the memtest-boot1-f.img file on the sd card and just ran it again.

What did I need to do instead?

I didn't mean to include both files in the first zip...
But all of them are meant to be flashed to the sdcard like the boot1. The one ending with 0 writes just zeros to the RAM and the second with the f writes just ones

So the dram seems to be ok, at least no obvious problem there.
For looking at hex files use a hex editor.
That just 4 bytes would be wrong would be strange, since it is encrypted I would expect everything afterwards in the block to be garbage too. Maybe the file just had a different version.

You could try redNAND. For that you need to use the latest defuse again, so it can load boot1 from slccmpt, so you can use a bigger SD card.
Then use the format redNAND option in the backup and restore menu and configure the rednand.ini to redirect everything and leave SCFM enabled.

redNAND will disable hmac checking on the redirected slc

Ok, I have been trying all day to get redNAND to work, but I have yet to. I first tried flashing the slccmpt.img file to my 64GB sd card and running de_fuse that way, but it wouldn't recognize it as a valid SD card. I then used a 2GB card and ran De-Fuse before switching to the 64GB card and running the format redNAND step. I then opened windows as made the rednand.ini file. It was throwing an error about not being able to find a redotp.bin file, so I put a normal otp.bin in the sd card and renamed it to redotp.

It would throw an error immediatly when trying to patch and boot with redNAND saying it couldnlt find either the redotp.bin or the rednand.ini file, even though windows could see those files easily.

Finding information on how to setup redNAND at all was difficult. If possible, could you write out the procedure for flashing the larger SD card and setting up redNAND? There's too many things that im not sure on.

you just flash the minute boot1 to the slccmpt boot1 by using the the restore slccmpt boot1 option in minute.
You don't ned redotp. That's not an error, just an information.
The rednand.ini needs to be in the minute folder

I'm still a bit confused. Do I flash the boot 1 to the 64GB card, flash the slccmpt using the restore option with the img file on the SD card, and then format redNAND from the menu?

Or do I need to start with the 2GB card I've been using, and switch to the 64GB card at some point in the process?

In the effort to be a bit more helpful then just saying that I have a problem, I'll go ahead and write out the procedure I've been trying:

I first took one of my 2GB cards already with de_fuse working and placed the slccmpt boot 1 img file from the de_fuse download zip file.

I than used that card to de_fuse and when to the backup and restore menu. I dumped both the slc boot 1 and the slccmpt boot 1 so I could restore it back if I needed to.

I then used the restore slccmpt boot 1 option, once this was done I switched the 2GB card out for my 64GB card and selected the format redNAND option.

Once this was done I removed the 64GB card and opened it on my computer, I then made a folder called minute on the SD card and created a file called rednand.ini in the minute folder. This is what I put into the rednand.ini file:

That's almost correct, but when you dumped the slccmpt boot1, you overwrote the slccmpt_boot1.img on the SD card.

If you use windows make sure to enable showing known file extentions, maybe you named the file accidentally rednand.ini.txt

I need to wait for a new 64GB card so I can retry RedNAND, as it is currently in use elsewhere, so i'll hopefully be able to try Rednand again in a few days.

in the meantime, I've been continuing to research and poke around with my system, because not knowing what exactly is broken on my wii u is really bugging me. However, I have some questions that I'm struggling to find answers for, so If you don't mind waying in, any help would be a massive boon.

1. In my research on RedNAND, I saw people saying that I would be unable to enter the virtual wii mode. is this true?

2. Do you know what process 5 is in the system logs? Or at least if what's failing is a boot0 error or a boot1 error? that is where

3. this one's a bit of an ask, but how do you use the keys found in the OTP.bin to actually go about decrypting parts of wii u's code?

4. I noticed that in the OTP.bin file the place where the boot1 key is supposed to be is zeroed out. Do we have any way to recover that key? I know that shinyquagsire23 has a python script that should allow me to get the boot1key, but I have no clue how to use that code in conjunction with the wii u. if i could get the key I might at least be able to confirm whether or not boot1 is okay.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm doing my best to learn as quick as a can, but there's certainly at lot to figure out. thanks in advance for any advice or aid you can offer.

1. No vWii works with redNAND as usual.

2. boot0 and boot1 are long gone by the time IOSU runs. You find the Cafe OS processes here: https://wiiubrew.org/wiki/Cafe_OS#Processes

3. I think that depends a little bit what code you are talking about exactly. But you can have a look at the minute code to see how it decrypts the fw.img for example.

4. The boot1 key gets locked out by boot0, after it decrypted boot1. It's not trivial to get the boot1 key.
If the LED turn blue (without defuse) you can assume boot1 is working.

I finally got the card, and redid everything I stated above. I formatted the 64 GB card using the format rednand. I made sure that there were no hidden file extensions, there weren't any.

I made sure not to dump anything before I hit the Restore BOOT1_SLCCMPT.IMG. Once that was done I took out the 2 GB card and inserted the formatted 64GB card with the rednand.ini file in it and hit "Patch (sd) and boot IOS redNAND"

I got the same error as last time.

It's saying: Failed to open `sdmc:/minute/rednand.ini`!

Would the fact that my SD card is a SDXC be a problem?

Progress, the patch seems to have worked. After a while it just said alive. Once it did that for a couple of minutes I Powered off the system and booted it without de_fuse. I got the same Error Code 160-2215. I feel like I'm finding every way to do things incorrectly.

Small tangent: 160-2215 is the code it's been from the beginning, but I was never able to find anyone else with this error. Is this the SLC data corruption error code perhaps?

It wasn't connected when I did the boot and patch for the rednand, but after I did that I connected it to my system and got the error.

I also have no idea how to disable the disc drive.

Edit:

I retried the boot and patch, and this time I also had the HDMI output connected. It shows a new error code: 160-2203.
Once I restarted the system though it was back to the same behavior as before. I will go Look at the new logs to see if I can find anything new.

So now I'm a bit curious on how redNAND was supposed to fix my problem. Given that I have memory corruption of some kind, wouldn't moving main memory to my sd card also bring over the same error that's crashing my system?

You also see that in the log, when you tried to boot, but it is intermixed with the Error from the Disc drive. So disabeling the Disc drive would make the logs better to read and won't have red herrings from the disc drive.

The file that seems to be corrupted is the slc:/sys/title/00050010/1000400a/code/padscore.rpl.

The goal of using redNAND was to try to fix the corrupten there in case the slc is so bad that you get immediately new corruption when reinstalling something.

You can try to reinstall the OSv10 title to see if that fixes the corruption.

You can also check the ISFS superblock information in minute to see what generation the superblocks are at now.

Ok, that makes sense. I didn't realize that minute wouldn't show the set SATA device setting if you don't have it connected. I set it to "no device" and reran the boot and patch. Here's what I got this time. Let me know if there's something interesting.

I don't know how to use minute to check ISFS superblock information. I didn't see any settings with that name in it.

I will go ahead and attempt to reinstall OSv10. I'll update the thread with the results once i'm able to get to it.
