At this point in time both cards DO HAVE THEIR PURPOSE. But that is about to change when the next firmware update drops... Then ppl's eyes will be opened

We will have to wait and see. You cant say that Sky3DS team will do nothing about it. Even if its just a new card. And who say Sky3DS cant be updated?

It's pretty clear that Sky3DS cannot be updated. They had to release a new card to remove the 10-game limitation.

If they could update Sky3DS they would have removed the 10-game limitation with a fw update.

Or maybe Sky3DS CAN be updated, but the team behind Sky3DS finds it better to release a new card than upgrade the old one.

Whatever the case, both outcomes mean Sky3DS cards do not get updated once you physically have it in your hands.

Because that propably was a hardware limitation. They can release an Update in .3ds or w/e form and update or something.

I love all these experts who know what's gonna happen in the next updates they must all work for nintendos fw department lets just love both cards for what they are if my sky3ds is blocked in the next update then so be it I will still be able to use it rather than update to the latest fw and that is good enough for me as things like online don't intrest me that's what my Xbox one is for

All I was agreeing with was the sentiment that both is an ok choice too. I get to play ROMs now AND later when the GW team releases support for 9.2.

I don't think a lot of people own both and I get they might be undecided on what choice to make. Some of us have chosen both.

da1e85 - do you have to use any special template to write to the blue button card? Do they all say EEPROM ="yes"?
I used the first released disk writer and template for resident evil donkey kong and animal crossing and Pokemon eeprom auto changed to know then the rest of my games I used the latest template and disk writer every game is now working perfectly.

uhh, what. in case you somehow missed it. they DID release a updated way to break the 10 game limitation on all carts. they only released new carts so people don't have to deal with doing it themselfs. (as much).

in all honesty, right now, its arguable that the old carts are better because they auto save, and the new blue button ones do not. a little compatability that will get fixed over time isn't much compared to dealing with save loss. especially when red users can just use eeprom=yes to force any game to work on upto 10 games.

still, if nintendo patches sky3ds, then that would suck. but i agree that while that might be able to detect sky3ds users, patching them out without screwing over legit customers is a big problem as well.

Care to explain?

So does the Gateway work on firmware 9.2 now..? Am on 7.x at the moment. Are there any games with the 9.2 update on it..? Or will I be better off waiting until next year for Gateway to sort out compatibility with 7.x..?

No, it doesn't, not yet. And there are no games with the 9.2 update on them out yet and I would doubt that Nintendo would allow a game to go out requiring that version and not 9.3/9.4 at least.

If you want ROMs NOW the Sky3DS would be the best option as we don't know how long it's going to take them to sort out support for the older firmware versions.

I get the point entirely but if Nintendo block gateways exploit then even updating the card might not work for that this happened on the ds the gateway isn't some magical forever updatable exploit as is neither the sky3ds

You didn't quote me, so I couldn't see your response.

The gateway exploit is actually blocked in 4.5+....they're simply releasing new versions of emulated nand via updates, which Sky3DS can't do, is it possible that Nintendo will someday release a firmware that they won't be able to emulate ?Maybe, BUT :

1)Gateway has been around for more than a year, using the same 1+ year old cart and will soon release 9.x compatibility, so instead of going backwards, they're actually moving forward and expanding.

2)Sky3DS has been out for like a month and a half and they're already releasing a 2nd cart, which you can't update in-case it gets blocked.

I'm not really defending anyone, just stating the facts.

Nobody knows if the card will be blocked and nobody knows if this second card is updatable assky3ds haven't stated it is or it isn't. I emailed the sky3ds team regarding this their reply was DONT worry about future updates there won't be a 3rd card this could mean anything but I think they are just keeping their cards close to their chest and we might be pleasantly surprised in the future the honest answer is nobody knows

Hopefully they're not full of shit, like always, I'm never against competition, I might get Sky3DS myself if they prove to be updatable.

Look, my new Sky3DS with the Blue button is due here tomorrow. I ordered from 3ds-Flash.com btw.
And, while everyone here is freely throwing around 'assumptions' and passing them off as fact.
I figure I may as well throw my ring into the hat as well.

Here is what I think about the new blue button Sky3ds:

1. Sky3DS did more than just color the button from Red to Blue.
2. The blue button product may in fact have a software compatible upgrade solution.
3. Sky3DS learned from their mistakes with the Red button product.
4. It is stated proven fact that the new blue button does not have previous limitations of the red button.
5. There was in fact an actual hardware/chip upgrade of this new product.
6. They are keeping this fact hush-hush. Why? Because, IT'S THE SMART THING TO DO.
7. The new blue button product is future-proof......barring a complete and total overhaul of the way ninty handles all current carts on the market today. (this is a key point based in technical reality)
8. Unlike the Gateway product, Sky3ds product may rely on some other 'exploit' that has little or nothing to do with firmware. Rendering any update irrelevant.

And last but not least, the Sky3DS may in fact be the best and most powerful product released to date and most here will not see it becuase they are too busy
championing another company's cause for no apparent reason.

sorry i was asleep.

anyway, yup. the blue button models do not auto save, i found this out when my reseller warned me when i asked if i could switch from red button to blue button. she also gave me a link to their site.

blue button
+no scrolling bug
+less hassle
+- EEPROM is automatically taken care of.
-no Auto saving, requires a trick

red button
+auto saving, never lose your save files
+far more reliable way to backup your saves
+- EEPROM manualy taken care of.
-scrolling bug (a minor annoyance)
-more hassle when adding games.

they both rely on the same templates, so compatibility should be the same. there are reports blue is far more compatable, but this is a illusion. this is because it sets its first 10 games as eeprom yes and then the rest as eeprom no.

EEPROM yes and no have diffrent compatibility lists. for example, eeprom yes FF thearhythm curtain call works fine, but for eeprom no, its currently still not working. however with each update the compatibility is getting better. the update today from their site OVERWROTE the old update, likely because of serious flaws, like say, how new super mario bros 2 would REFORMAT the micro sd card if eeprom was no :creep: with the new update, the game works fine.

also, you may notice i put EEPROM manual as +- in both red and blue, thats because its arguable. the convenience of blue is great, and the annoyance for reds to do it manually is obvious, however a red user can save their 10 YES eeprom slots for specific games. for example, today i used a YES slot on kdid icarus, cause i really wanted to play it. where as for blue users, untill the compatibility chart gets better, past their first YES EEPROM games, they will never be able to play kid icarus unless sky3ds site released new updates to make it compatible.

so, eeprom manual is a hastle, but it can also be used like a emergency miracle fix 10 times only for red users, for the games they want nomatter what.

Hey Dawn!
Can you please check to see if Metal Gear 3D is working on your bluebutton card?
And, are you using a special program to turn eeprom off/on?

Thanks

I'm using red. Blue button users CANNOT CHOSE between eeprom yes/no. when you dd them to the card, right before it writes them in, it changes the template automatically.

also i..don't really want to test that, theres a bunch of other games that i'm testing. here is the compatability list https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZUSaCSxa8M-wPfvHtnlnJGAqjRsxkPa4hsuNCIjkLOE/edit?usp=sharing

however, if you havn't writen in 10 games yes, you can just put it on, and it wil be set to eeprom = yes.

let me clarify a moment, your worried about wasting you 10 slots i take it? your 10 YES slots get taken up nomater what on your first 10 games (for blue users). and they will ALWAYS run the game perfect, nomater what. so if you have any YES slots left, just put the game on no worries. if its no eeprom, then tell us the results.

note to test new games (when testing eeprom no games) on a different micro sd, as you can see from my google doc, some games cause 0mb bug (making the micro sd uneditable, so it must be reformated) or other various bugs.

also, even if you COMPLETLY, DELETE, AND REFORMAT the micro sd card, or even use a diffrent micro sd, any game with eeprom= yes the saves wil stil be there. this is because the saves arn't on the micro sd, but on the cart itself. the cart only has limited space for saves, and thats why there is only 10 EEPROM YES slots allowed.

So how does the diskwriter know whether you have a blue button cart or a red button cart to change the EEPROM if you're only writing to the MicroSD?
