Tutorial Simple Guide to Downgrading your 3DS

I have 2 old 3ds xl and a new 3ds xl.

Yesterday I started working on downgrading my old 3ds xl with firmware 10.1xxx.

First I used systemupdater to update my firmware to 10.3 and then I used safesysupdater to downgrade to 9.2. This weekend I will try to work with the remaining 3ds's.

I have a N3DSXL ( Majora's Mask ) running 9.9.0-26U. I want to downgrade it to 9.2. Is this possible? I have looked through this thread a bit and reddit, some things are a bit vague. Seems like E was ok doing it? But, things are still a bit unclear for N3ds.

I have menuhax, old ironhax on there, and I do need to remove my Tubehax DNS ( which I assume is the custom DNS we originally did when we messed with Tubehax). I'll keep reading around, but if anyone has a suggestion on my particular 3DS, I'd appreciate.

Edit: So looks like some of you are using a way to upgrade to 10.3 and then go down to 9.2 from there if you are running 9.9.0-26U, but still not a whole lot on my crazy firmware.

Downgrading is possible, I also downgraded a n3ds (but small) from 9.9E to 9.2E. Put out your dns. Then use menu hax and open ftbrony. After pressing a (to start ftbrony) spam b. Then go as fast as possible to sysUpdater and press y. And now pray...

Ahh ok, so you did a European 3DS? I'll give it a shot. Will it have a chance of a hard brick, and are there posters that managed to downgrade the US version yet? If you don't know, I understand, I've been reading craploads before trying this.

Yes, I have a European n3ds. You can't calculate the chance of hard bricking. Just deactivate your dns and give it a try. With the menuhax+ftbrony+sysUpdater combi it worked perfectly on the 1st try for me. And now I can run emunand .

Edit: Disregard that I suck the obvious. Confirmed downgrade working for N3DSXL Majora's Mask edition, that was previously running 9.9.0-26U. Any ideas for what CFW I should stick on there guys?

I have an old 3DS running 9.5.0-22 at the current moment. From what I've read, its recommended to update to 10.3 before downgrading to 9.2, right? I currently have Browserhax and Homemenuhax installed, and can run legit CIAs.

So basically use sysupdater.CIA to use the 10.3 update, then follow OP to downgrade to 9.2? Any other way or success stories?

EDIT: I read that if I update to 10.3, the browser will prompt for an update. Is this true? Anyway to bypass? Is Browserhax obsolete on 10.3 now? I believe 10.4 is still unhacked, and 10.5 definitely. Of course even on 10.5 with browserhax I can't downgrade lol. So, can I still update to 10.3? Or did Nintendo make that obsolete.

If I update to 10.3 can't I just keep my WiFi turned OFF the whole time and it won't "look" for an update, allowing me to use the browser?

Back with a success story!! I have successfully downgraded my OG 3DS!

I started on 9.5.0-22U and updated to 10.3.28-U using sysupdater from this thread. Got browserhax. Then I tried multiple times using Julian's safesysupdater and kept getting "FAIL can't get am:u service" so I installed homemenuhax again and then I tried and tried getting the safesysupdater to work and kept getting the infamous "pink dots". Finally, it teased me and said "hax successful" 3 times and froze. Finally it didn't freeze and all the CIA files installed with zero issue, no errors whatsoever and when it told me it would reboot and it was successful, it took like 30 seconds to reboot. But here it sits on the main home menu. All my games that I got off the eShop were wrapped but all work perfectly, Internet works, no settings crash, all good thus far I can tell.

Alas, I have to go to work and won't be off until midnight to install the cfw. Thanks for the guide though, just wanted to chime in on my success story. If anyone has an older firmware, UPDATE TO 10.3 FIRST! and keep your WiFi turned off so you won't download the new update, causing the browser not to work.

No brick. Success. 9.2.0 3DS original.

This is awesome news all. It's finally good to know 9.9.0-26U works for just downgrade. I went with Cake for CFW by the way with the files for it, but ultimately decided to just let Menuhax boot into it automatically and load Reinand so I can see the "Rei" check on. Woot.

now i have n3ds with 9.9.

my first try was to update 9.9. to 10.3. but i always get "Failed to get CIA file info"
i already testet different version of the sysupdater and a different micro sd.

my second try was a direct downgrade from 9.9. to 9.2 but same error.

i installed menuhax and using it for homebrew access ... also i can use browerhax with tunehax DNS , but i deleted it because i could cause problems

So my brother just got a o3dsXL yesterday on 10.3U. I myself has had a O3DS on 9.2 for ages now and am new to this whole downgrading thing. It seems that downgrading has been a lot safer since it first came out? Do I need to do the FTBrowny trick, or can I skip it? I would hate to brick a console that my brother just got yesterday.

Also, what other tips can help?

sysUpdater crashed for me on my 9.9 N3DS USA, but it was not bricked, so I installed oothax for 9.2 and installed menuhax for 9.2 with oothax and finished the downgrade.

I have been trying to downgrade for 2 weeks straight trying different versions of the sysupdater. i formatted my sd card, hard reset the 3ds, till eventually I used the safesysupdater and it worked first try. I just had to make sure I was connected to internet for it to work and check the md5 on its own then it said it was good to go and my files matched my 3ds version then it downgraded successfully.

I had the same issues but I used the ftbrony trick and sysupdater regular. Worked when using menuhax. Mine crashed half way but I just reinstalled oothax for 9.2 using my O3DS and then was able to retry and it worked.
