Hardware Should I still buy?

According to HMV the person in there said they expect that the NGP will do well but it will struggle because they have indications that the device is going to be expensive at around the same price as the PS3 Slim which at present is around £329.00 in the uk.

thats true. but i just think NGP will be alot more money than people think its gunna be.
Sony can get the NGP at around the 3DS price tag, since they don't profit from consoles.

Its a new DS. If you enjoyed the regular DS, and you think the lineup of announced 3ds games so far seems good, then the decision to get it seems like a no brainer to me.
It's all about the games.
I was about to say this so kudos to Zarxrex.

Just think about how incredible the DS's huge library was. Sure, there were about a billion shovelwarez, but there were also about a million good games. There's no reason to think that the 3DS's library won't be just as good, if not better.

You don't need to have it set on 3D, and some of the games look pretty good...but it all depends on what sort of games you prefer and what make you mainly stood by and enjoyed.

If you love games loaded with great graphics, long storylines, great sound (and now ALSO touch screen) - then NGP.

If you're a die hard fan of Nintendo and have enjoyed there stuff from year dot, you're not particularly bothered by graphics and all the fancy stuff (and are excited for their remakes and ports)..then 3DS (set on 2D). PLUS...it'll be cheaper

You could always purchase the 3DS and see how you feel about it, if it's not something you're really that happy about...trade it in for an NGP when that comes out.
Graphics at wii isn't good enough for significance?, other words you made 3DS graphics seem outright bad. How do you know about the sound? Plus you made it seem that 3DS can't handle/have long storylines. It isn't just remake and ports.

Well 3DS graphics are good (about high Wii quality I'd say at max) but are pretty thoroughly bested by NGP graphics.

And I can't say that the 3DS won't have deep storylines (I mean it has MGS3, which is a pretty lengthy and epic story), but the PSP had much lengthy and deeper storylines than DS games, I'll just throw that out there. PSP games in general had more depth than DS games I'd say. Not that DS games are bad, but the PSP library just feels much deeper. The amount of PSP games that you can dump like 100+ hours into is really quite crazy.

i read this topic thoroughly, and i agree with every single thing Guild McCommunist has posted. The 3DS is pretty much the same thing as the ds except for the 3D. Im not a sony fanboy nor a nintendo fanboy as i own a ds,wii and a psp,ps3 im an apple fanboy.... jk. What im trying to say is,the system itself is not all important get whichever system has better games for you. Im actually getting both just to see the difference, but it all depends on you.

The 3D is atm just a gimmick (nice feature?) ... until games really require the 3D effect (which to me almost seems impossible ... might be harder, but one should still be able to see/judge what's further and/or closer) you'll hardly see/notice any difference except for an extended battery life (doubt it will be a lot though).

If you like the line-up of releases you shouldn't hold yourself back because you can't "use" the 3D. I'll probably will use it without 3D too, seeing how much battery-life it eats. But for now it's too expensive for my wallet (not much "must-gets" for me either) so I'll just wait for the price to drop below 200 euro).

Simple thought for when buying a console: does it have the games you like? (Iaw: I don't think any game will be that much less enjoyable without using the 3D feature).

It's all about the games, mate. Let the lineup make your decision for you, not the 3D gimmick. Plus, games actually have more power from the GPU and can potentially look better in 2D.

I know PSP2 graphics are better, but the way he put it is that 3DS graphics are no good. lengthy =/= deeper storyline. Just because psp games tin to be longer doesn't make them most of the time have deeper storylines. Also some psp games I play are just repetitive. Plus it so many ds games (including Japan) how do you go on to compare story lines to psp anyway?

As in you having play every single psp and ds game to know that. All I was saying it that just like the ds the 3DS can have long storylines.

He wasn't saying the 3DS was like ds because it isn't even without the 3D. He was just saying 3D was useless which I still disagree on.

I've played a lot of PSP games and a lot of DS games and I can say PSP games tend to have better and more complex storylines and depth. And usually longer games equate to more time to develop the plot and characters outside of some games (like say Pokemon, which is more focused on collection and stuff, or Fallout 3, which was more focused on the environment and open world).

I mean the DS has games with stories, but most of them are meh stories (although can still be thoroughly enjoyable). I'm just saying if you're gonna make guesses comparing this generation of handhelds to the next, which seems like a decent way to make predictions, you can assume that the NGP will probably have better story-focused games.

Mind you not all games should or need to have stories. Pokemon stories are utter shit but I don't pick up a Pokemon game thinking "WOW I CAN'T WAIT TO BE BLOWN AWAY BY THE PLOT!" I pick it up because it's a fun RPG game and probably one of the best portable series out there.

Actually the stories have been getting better. While it's not the deepest story ever, I was quite impressed with the storytelling in BW. Also, I quite liked FFIV and Chrono Triggers' stories.

They're still really shitty. It's the same story just with different names and more useless dialogue. Pokemon stories are bad and any attempt to make them good would be foolish.

FFIV will be on the PSP come April and Chrono Trigger is still not a DS native.

You may be right, but one thing I wanted to ask is didn't umds hold more then ds cart as in data? If so then I think some games did great stories despite the smaller space.

Nintendo could've designed medium that was larger honestly. And really the only reason PSP games can be rather large is because of the amount of video on them. Video can tell a story but isn't needed. Developers can make a game with story with the size limitations.

Who the fuck cares the story in a videogame? Shit! All what I want is play the fucking game! Get back to me arcade games! At least that games were far better!

I care about story. Video games have proven themselves to be more than a piece of entertainment. Nowadays they're as much a piece of art and media as movies, television, etc.

Anyone who truly believes that games haven't gotten better over like 20+ years is just jaded. I'll easily argue games nowadays are better than games way back when.

Some aspects of games have improved, but a lot of the classics are much better. i.e.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 vs Sonic the Hedgehog 4?

Which is better?

I appreciate classic gaming a lot, but I do agree with you that games nowadays produce amazing, engrossing visuals and stories that a lot of retro games can't compare to.

PS: Juanmatron, your comment is stupid. Stories are important in modern gaming because "arcade style" gaming is pretty much dead. Most games focus on story and end up sucking... hard. with a shitty story.

Sonic 4 was just unimpressive in general. I think it'd still get the same reviews even if there was no Sonic 1-3 to give it such hype or great expectations.

But you compare a RPG from way back when and some of the RPGs nowadays, today's RPGs blow them away. Plots are better, characters are deeper, combat systems are more dynamic, etc.

I have not played the NGP, but from playing the PSP comparing to the DS and the 3DS..i'd imagine the NGP may have improved the sound somewhat.
And yes the 3DS graphics are still not quite up to scratch of the PSP in some cases...especially when it comes to the NGP. Nintendo have concentrated a lot on the 3D effect which is a bit here and there..but that is not to say that there won't be glossy-high end games in the future.

And i know it isn't JUST remake and ports..but that is a big factor as to why people want to buy the console, so they can play N64 or older classics out and about, without having to plug in their archaic console or emulate it.

True, unless you argue that RPGs nowadays just steal old school combat systems and dynamics and rehash them over and over (mainstream Tales series) lol.

It depends on how you look at them, and which games you talking about. I see so many uninspired RPGs on 360, PS3, and DS it is a joke.

However, compare Rune Factory 3 to the original Harvest Moon. So many additions, changes, and variety it is obvious Natsume has greatly improved the quality dramatically.

I wish ALL companies only improved instead of taking steps back...

I agree with you completely here.

On the latter line, however, is where people come to misunderstand things. Games as a whole have gotten better, but that doesn't mean just because a game is newer it's better. For instance, Final Fantasy IV is an amazing game IMO, the story, the enemies, the characters, so many things about it made it great. Final Fantasy XIII came out last year. Arguable, FFIV is the better game because it puts it's strengths at better use and doesn't try to do anything "revolutionary" gameplay-wise.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, there are very few games lately that have had amazing stories. Saying storytelling has gotten better is false. It hasn't gotten worse, but I don't think we've enhanced storytelling (Though the MGS series does it very well).
