Untrue. Even reading in the dark will only tire your eyes. That's where the myth came from. You strain your eyes and can't see as well for a bit. Nintendo takes a lot of pride in the battery life of its portables. I still think its one of the reasons why the original GameBoy did so well compared to the Gamegear or the Lynx or the Turbo Express, they all sucked down batteries so fast it wasn't funny.
Like others have said before me, I hope you can turn it off, if they do include that "feature".
