It's the angle/ lighting of the photo. It's very clear in that photo they aren't backlit.

I expect better from Gaydrian...

Well it is a rumor and Gaydrian just got it from another site.
The thing that tipped me off the most was the 3D slider decal being "backlit" too.

I think the chance of having a backlight is about 90%. It's incredibally hard to see without one if its dark even with your bedroom light on.

Fixed.

Unless you have issues with finding the buttons, than you wouldn't need its battery draining help. Also, if you can't find the buttons, gaming might not be your thing.

Meh, I don't like playing in the dark anyways. Ruins your eye sight even more. :]
Untrue. Even reading in the dark will only tire your eyes. That's where the myth came from. You strain your eyes and can't see as well for a bit. And even that doesn't apply here, because you don't have to strain your eyes out to see a backlit screen.

Also, I don't see how that render indicates lit buttons.

Sorry that's wrong.

Because the room is dark, your pupils will open more to allow more light in. In you then have a small bright light source, more of that will be allowed through the pupil than is good for you.

Take driving, when driving in the dark the headlights of cars coming towards you can sometime hurt your eyes. View those same headlights during the day and you hardly notice them, thats because your pupil are more closed.

If you have used a camera, it's known as over exposure.

I honestly think the entire 3ds is a bad Idea.
Don't buy it? You can just turn off the 3D part using the slider anyways.
More on-topic, I was always under the impression that the 3DS shown there was a bad model made by someone at EA

.
So I doubt it acually has backlit buttons.

You guys have no idea how useful it is to have an Apple MB Pro backlit keyboard at night. Seriously, I mean, I can type without looking at the keyboard (and have done for years), but sometimes you're looking for that specific shortcut/key and it helps. The good thing is that it's sensor controlled, so during the day it doesn't drain battery.

I'm assuming the 3DS has this. Sensor controlled would be a lot better than having to manually enable/disable it (though both features SHOULD be available). But yes, it does help in the long run. At least in my experience.

A backlit keyboard is a very useful feature, but that's because it has over 50 keys, whereas the 3DS has a few buttons and the screens are generally bright enough to illuminate them a bit already.

Still, it's one of those 'cool but not essential' features.

It's enough to make Nintendo sell a few more units.

I honestly doubt it.

Nintendo takes a lot of pride in the battery life of its portables. I still think its one of the reasons why the original GameBoy did so well compared to the Gamegear or the Lynx or the Turbo Express, they all sucked down batteries so fast it wasn't funny.

Like others have said before me, I hope you can turn it off, if they do include that "feature".
Well, that might require the use of that Home button unless there's a switch for that XD

It is like a hit or miss feature. Some will like it, others don't care.

Personally I don't care, cause I don't play in dark room.
