Rumor: Senior industry source says Sony’s at work on PSP 2

Rumor has it – and a very speculative rumor at that – Sony’s at work on a new iteration of PSP.

According to a senior industry source speaking to MCV, a “significant increase in marketing” is being allotted for two key publishers during Q4 2010, with one publisher telling the online magazine that it’s waiting on Sony to announce its new platform before it can reveal its future PSP plans.

While PSP, currently in its sixth year of existence, has remained somewhat the same since its initial release, it’s being speculated by the unnamed publisher that an updated version – or new one entirely – will possibly be revealed at E3.

Last year, Sony had the wind taken out of its sails with the leak of PSPgo before it could be revealed at its Press Event, but there were loads of schematics and massive amounts of rumbling on the new system long before the Qore episode was purportedly leaked.

MCV notes that there are no documents floating about that it’s aware of, and when contacted, Sony replied that there were “no imminent plans to launch a new PSP”.

So, whether the publishers are mistaken, confused, or right on the money is anyone’s guess at this time, and while possibly far-fetched, it’s out there now for your consideration.

Even if this is just another PSP revision, a PSP2 will almost certainly come out someday and nothing's impossible to hack.

Can't see this being that much more powerful but I can see a touch screen, better online, extra better sticks etc. Kinda like a reboot more than anything, sort of like what the Go should have been.

If Sony are clever enough they would implement a lot of stuff that would make it worthwhile while at the time not change much of the graphical capabilities to save on a bit of cash on producing the units.

There's a difference between being "powerful enough" and "overpowered". The PS3 was so overpowered for its time, that it delayed (by a hell of a long time) any possible revenue Sony could make off actual hardware sales... in addition to making the hardware prohibitively expensive for far too many potential customers, for too long. Development was also complicated by the fact that it was much more difficult to create games for.

If the 3DS rumours turn out to be accurate, and it's about on the level of a Gamecube (maybe a tad better), then that will be more than enough for a handheld console at this time. 854x480 resolution rocks compared to what we've got on either the current DS, or even the PSP.

If the PSP is head over tails more powerful than that? All fans will get is an overpriced piece of hardware that stays overpriced for too long, with overly expensive games that are more difficult and expensive to develop. I would've hoped Sony had learned from the PS3.

It's not like Xbox graphics are so much better than PS2 graphics

If Nintendo's doing the GameCube thingie, Sony needs to be at Wii level at least.

I'm not too negative on the PSP as a system. It has a lot of positive sides. I still prefer a DS though, and DS has a lot more games as well. I hope the PSP2 will be better (and affordable...). I might actually get one, if only for playing my PS1 games from PSN.

I know there's a difference

and I meant overpowered, I remembered reading somewhere of a rumour that PSP2 would have power around halfway between the original Xbox and the 360. Even if the source is guessing, I still think Sony will probably make it overpowered.

if they make a psp2 i wont buy it unless its hack or at least has its own youtube app lol I love my psp and my homebrew but the most used app on GoTube and that doesn't even work right half the time lol.

A new PSP, huh? I guess this was to be expected. I'm not really looking forward to it, but if it gets some good games for once (no matter how hard you try, you can never say the PSP had a bunch of great games) I might buy it. If it isn't too expensive. Still, the '3DS' is top priority for me.

I wasn't shocked when I read this, and I was not the least bit excited.

I learned my lesson from the PSP. I'm not saying the PSP2 is going to suck, but I'm either:

A: Waiting until after launch for buying my next handheld.

B: Researching it more.

I bought the PSP at launch when I had a DS because it was so hyped, and even with it modded, I haven't even played ten games on it over the course of five years.

But the posted picture does look cool, but it wouldn't be able to fit in someone's pocket from how I'm picturing it. Also, if that's the design, the battery is going to last like 2 hours.
