Rovio: Console games are "dying"

Company makes what 50 give or take 30 million dollars off there 1 dollar game, I wonder how much those "dying console" games that sell over a million year over year make at 50-60 dollars a pop. Sure in some sense some game types are dying or not making much if any profit that's how it has always been though, but to say console games as a whole is retarded.

How long has the PC gaming market been dead now? As long as devs have been wanting you to only buy console games, and the FUD hasn't worked there. There are still more people playing WoW than are on Live and PSN combined.

You have to put it into perspective of development time and cost. Most of the top selling console games generally take a year or more to develop. Angry Birds was started in early 2009 and released on iOS in December of the same year. With 50 million downloads as of December 2010, Angry Birds is still one of the hottest games going. Roughly a years development time initially has yielded over 50 million downloads of the game since, versus a game like Call of Duty which doesn't even come close to selling that many copies even across 3 platforms, and takes more time, effort and money to develop by a much larger team.

Which do you think has rewarded the most financial gain? Rovio Mobile has made an estimated 42 million dollars off Angry Birds after having ported it to Android and other platforms. A simple game that took around 12 months to make, makes that much in profits over the course of a year, while a game like Call of Duty stops selling after the first couple of weeks and people have got their copies. It's not so much about the cost more then it is about accessibility and game support. Rovio has updated Angry Birds a few times since it's release, meanwhile other big name console titles are abandoned in favour of completely new instalments with no real improvements aside from a different single player mode and some changed multiplayer balancing issues, as was the case in Black Ops for instance. The average consumer won't go buy games that are the same titles just with new skins and a different layout, only fanboys do that and it's been evident for a long time that it's true.

And according to Digitaltrends, Angry Birds is one of the most mainstream games on the market right now and it's popularity is a testament to that, Call of Duty maybe popular but it's flash in the pan popularity, not long lasting since Activision stops supporting the latest and greatest so that people are forced to buy each new game if they want new content and that's a really lousy business model to be honest.

They are so naive, because they only did produce games for MOBILE and PC games yeah WTF.(PSP/PS3 too)

WTH are they thinking like! Yeah they are dying, not the whole console world WTF are they thinking?

This my the by me builded opinion about angry birds:

Its fun for a small period. But after some time it gets boring, no variation etc.

Console games are "dying" just as much as PC games are "dying".

Console games are a full immersive experience. mobile games are good for nothing but to just pass the time.

When was the last time you heard someone trash talk about how many stars they have on Angry Birds? How many news articles have there been about a korean teenager dying because he played The Impossible Game for 48 hours straight?

please. Console gaming isn't going anywhere.

He also acts like the success of Angry Birds is typical of devs on the app market. It's not. Most devs see a couple thousand dollars at the very most. Angry Birds was a fluke. I'm going to make my own prediction here: He may release sequels, and rake in millions...BUT I can gurantee he won't fine anywhere near the same recognition if they decide to explore new IPs.

Well you have to look at it from their perspective:

Their opinion is only going to matter to those that play flash games like Angry Birds, mostly iPawns.
They know that the iPawns will listen to anything they say and believe it (The price is higher because Macs are superior, console games are dying, etc.).
Because of this, they can say "console games are dying" and have more iPawns buy their game for the 300th time on another iDevice, therefore making more money.

Really nice plan, actually.

Well, I mean...

I agree with him that we should see more simple games, not everything needs to be a AAA title to be enjoyable, but....I wouldn't really trust a guy (with video game advice) who created the worst game of 2010, according to the Monkast.

Completely agree.

Just because their version of their game sucked on the PS3 they start complaining LoL...

Casual gamers are prevalent in today's market, but only because of the proliferation of the iPhone and other iOS devices. However, hardcore gamers can't hardcore game on the go. At least, certainly not in technology's current state of affairs.

Do they seriously think Angry Birds can compete with the likes of Mario, Pokémon, GTA or Call of Duty?
yes , yes they believe that something as simple as Angry Birds can compete and sell better than all those series .

this made me laugh . Angry Birds is a simple , portable game that's good on the go . once you beat all the levels , there really is no more point in playing the game . the next time you'll be playing the game is after a holiday update is released , and all they do is add some new scenery and that's it .

Must be out of your mind if you think I'm picking Angry Birds over Zelda, Mario, real Street Fighter,DOA,
Phoenix right, Professor Layton, Halo (what like the game when I get the chance to play it.

) GTA,Sonic,
One Piece,Disgaea and No More Heroes etc...

Then they have phones cloning/making a turn down rehash or good games like some of those and saying they are better... >.>

@DSGamer64 With a name like DSGamer64 I do not think, just like this article, you believe what you are saying.

well i dont agree totally with him but yes its due to the easy availability and the extremely cheap price that has caused so much attention towards it. Console games are dying due to price problems. I personally am not satisfied with any idevice game due to the controls although the content is quite good. Hence therefore something that is totally gaming is wonderful such as the DS, gba and PSP. Even playing these games on the PC (with emu) is not fun
So console games are dying due to the costs of production and the rise of mobile devices and their power to play and create easily and good games

I'll give credit to some things though. Having Phoenix Wright on my iPhone (I don't have any iOS device, but lets assume I do) isn't any more fun than having it on the DS, but having the ability to own a Gaming, Music, and Social-Networking phone all wrapped up in one is a really great thing.

Still doesn't beat out gaming on my Xbox or my laptop though.

This is a joke. Some 14yo was featured on the front page of Yahoo for creating an app that has been downloaded 14 million times.

It was basically just a physics engine that he didn't create combined with uncreative level design and gameplay.

Flash programmers have been doing this for years.
