My sister has a Samsung Gem and asked me what rooting was and if/what I could do it do her phone. I have a few questions:

Can it be rooted?

If so, what can she do with a rooted phone?

Is there any possible way of recovery if somehow the phone got screwed up during the rooting process?

Thanks in advance.

You probably could root her phone. With a rooted phone, you can do some cool stuff that requires Superuser access e.g. sharing an internet connection via Bluetooth (Though personally, I've never had any luck with that on my Wildfire)
As part of the rooting process, you may as well push a CyanogenMod ROM to the phone. That will allow for more customisation, better RAM usage and CPU overclocking. But unless she needs to do something that can ONLY be done with a rooted phone, I advise not to root.
