Rockstar releases its very own games launcher for Windows

rockstar games launcher.jpg
In case you were looking for yet another games launcher for your PC, more specifically, for Rockstar games, you've been served! Launched today, the aptly-named Rockstart Games Launcher is your new gateway for anything Rockstar on Windows.

This brand-new launcher now allows you to access your PC Rockstar games across both digital and disc-based titles including ones purchased from various other digital stores. Additional features include the addition of cloud save functionality to all supported titles, the ability to keep your Rockstar Games PC library updated automatically, and ways to follow all the latest Rockstar Games news from directly inside the Launcher.

As an incentive for you to download this launcher, Rockestar is giving away for an unspecified "limited time" a free copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on PC within the Rockstar Games Launcher, to permanently add it to your Social Club account’s library.

To be fair, you don't ever need more than one launcher up at a time. You also can organize them however you want. They do take up space, but not a lot. The games take up space regardless.
Also I don't know how many people bother checking every game they buy from steam to see if it needs steam open to function correctly.
I know it's about drm in that case, but you're already on the platform where the majority of devs use drm willingly
If they slow down your pc, then you need to exit them out of the tray, turn of autoupdates, etc...
I know there are certain companies who have launchers that people may have issues with, but that's not really about the idea of the launcher itself

i await the day of the open source launcher which pulls from all launchers using one simple gui.

...i can dream ya know.

Hello, Launchbox, mGalaxy, HyperSpin, etc.. OK, I don't know if those are open source or not, but they are launchers that can pull from other launchers. I remember being disappointed by Launchbox's slugglishness, though. I generally make shortcuts to games I want to play on PC that are on other platforms on Steam to use all of the features that come with launching games via Steam.

Apparently the Steam versions are getting updated to require installation of this launcher as well. In the words of Charlie Brown, "good grief".

This new launcher is replacing the older Social Club launcher, which was also mandatory, as far as I know (at least on the non-steam version). I haven't updated or launched GTA V in a while so I haven't confirmed it myself yet.

But rockstar has been using its own launcher for years now? The store part is new, sure, but the launcher was always mandatory for GTAV.

almost there lol
pretty damn responsive, open source, incorporates other launchers and emulators.

Can it autokill launchers you aren't using? Because the way things are going even 16GB of RAM won't be nearly enough given how bloated all the launchers are due to all the frameworks and other crap that is incorporated which means you can expect to have each one use 300-500MB of ram even when doing nothing and of course they can't be swapped out because then how would they be able to display their oh so valuable notifications. With a dozen launchers you are looking at a good 4-6GB of RAM being used just for various launchers which is just insane.

Sadly no,but it's open source so ANYBODY with the know how could contribute such a piece of code. I would love to myself, but am not experienced enough as I'm new to it, but maybe one day if someone hasn't gotten to it. Either way it is more than easy enough to turn of autoupdates, notifications, overlays, etc..... and exit launchers as need be. Also this is just basic management of your computer such as removing unneeded startup tasks and such things

guys, I think it's time for the GBAtemp windows launcher, access all those GBAtemp resources that you already can but through a completely pointless windows program that totally doesn't only exist to harvest more user data

you need to pay for the streaming services on pc

He is comparing FREE installers to PAID cable TV, if you think that adds up you need to go back to school.

Also;

twitch > free
Youtube > free
pornhub > free

Yeah, streaming services are so expensive, oh wait.

Only big difference is that you need to pay for cable TV, so it is nothing like cable TV...

And I quote from WAUthethird,

"PC gaming is turning into cable TV. Same with online video streaming, actually.

This much fragmentation is not a good idea."

Way to miss the point. Did you vote for $hillary in 2016?

GOG Galaxy 2.0 I believe is promising this.

I'm definitely opposed to this. As one who has stood for convince above all else, having so much launchers for PC is just really inconvenient.

I was implying that the number of channels on cable TV increased exponentially over time, fragmenting the sources from which you could receive the content you wanted to watch, not unlike video streaming services - and...
PC gaming launchers.

My comment had nothing to do with whether you had to pay for it or not; that's looking for a fallacy where there isn't one.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
