It's already been said before that the team DID in fact go out of their way to make sure that backups could not be used. That is arguable, but I strongly believe that the incompatibility was done on purpose.
You mean it's been lied about before on this forum. The team never said Riivolution had anti-piracy controls...in fact, they specifically said what was in the FF4 project was removed for the general release.

I've got a newsflash for you people with modchips: if your modchip was doing everything right, it wouldn't be possible to detect it. Clearly it is doing something wrong even if the Wii doesn't notice...but anyone who's program depends on getting the correct information (such as, I dunno, Riivolution??) needs to check that everything is correct.

Title changed
Stop talking about Riivolution itself now please, there's another topic for that

uhm "how" wasn't really part of the topic just if it is possible, but kinda works like this
You take the cIOS source and add SD access code.
Update the FST and then change the DVDLowRead to read from SD when a changed file is requested otherwise read from the ISO/USB-HDD.

Here's what I don't get - why can't the developers support legitimate users and backup loaders by implementing the prevention methods the HBC has for duplication, and requiring a legit disc of NSMB to validate on installing of the channel for use.
It isn't going to change much - the only pirates who it won't stop are the hard modders and SNEEK users, and it doesn't stop them anyway.

And if you say they don't want to, fine, but there is no denying that the whole anti-backup thing makes no damn sense. "You want faster loading speeds? A SHAME ON YOU DIRTY PIRATE! NO USEFUL FEATURE FOR YOU!"
While there /are/ people who use USB loaders for convenience and also buy all their games (I do this with DS games and my flashcart), I'm very sure that they're in a minority compared to people who just want to pirate everything.

If Aaron and tueidj don't want to support this - that's their choice. Also, introducing USB loading in addition to disc loading would require them to write extra code and provide more ways for things to go wrong.

Forcing people to insert a legit disc to "validate the game" sounds like a good idea.. but how exactly do you expect it to work? If you have to insert the disc every time - well, that completely defeats the point. And if it stores data for which discs have been validated - it can be faked.

Btw, Creating "backups" is also illegal. Maybe not as illegal as pirating, but it is (Well ok, in most parts of the world at least).

You already have to insert the disc every time now as well

It would be kinda like the system the x360 has I guess

in germany it is illegal to make backups of anything that has a copyprotection of ANY kind no matter how good it is, all tools which can get around those copyprotections are illegal in germany, awesome right?

creating back ups in the US is legal as long as you own an original copy of the game.
This is true under a couple of provisos:
1. No one may distribute or exchange backed-up copies. This means that even if you own the game you cannot download a similar or even identical backup copy from anyone else. The uploader is violating the copyright holder's exclusive rights to distribution and in downloading it you become accessory to violation and are a violator yourself. Thus, the backup would have to made by you on your own copy. Unfortunately, this still doesn't matter because...
2. Circumventing copy protection is illegal and voids the backup copy exception. Because all Wii discs are copy-protected, any backup copy of a Wii game (or any game for any Nintendo console in history) is illegal. There is no such thing as a legal Nintendo backup copy.

You can tell yourself that it's semi-ethical if you own the game, but no, it's never legal.

Simplest way is on installation, MD5 some files to validate if it's a legitimate disc or a backup - for instance I'm pretty sure no chip can run the game without the modded DOL. Of course then there's the whole issue of ensuring that it isn't a chip user with a disc that won't launch installing it - but in the end, chip users can already use it so it doesn't matter all that much to begin with. After that, you wouldn't need the disc.
Also, tying it to some essential files in the NAND would be good (MAC size, exact file size of a random save during installation for randomizing the hash, etc.) - it'd be a bit more work, definitely, but then the legitimate owners would be getting something of use. The ONLY issue I can think of is someone trying as hard as possible to make a WAD of it - but since no one has even managed to duplicate Riivolution, they could easily obfuscate the dol, and tie it to certain files in the NAND (like I mentioned earlier) to prevent the duplication.

Aaron and tueidj don't even need to support it - I'm sure that there's someone out there willing and able to implement the USB Loading functionality for them, if they were granted the source code. Then all we'd need is the installer.

That would kinda all be unnecessary. Think about what Riivolution does: it allows you to use files from a SD/USB/Network device instead of the files on the disc. The only restriction is that you need the original disc in the drive to start the game.
