Even if the game itself wasn't ready, they couldn't put together any sort of trailer for the conference? Screenshots? Official announcement? Anything?

To me it sounds like they were ready for it, but then thought of a new idea that they wanted to add to the game and wanted it to be featured in the announcement.

That's just the way I see it.
