Hi everyone. I have a large retro game console collection and I am looking for details on affordable video set ups. Currently most of my consoles are connected via cheap HDMI adapters. My goal is to get the least expensive analog to video set up with good picture quality and in turn create a few usable spreadsheets for first time retro gamers and hobbyists who want to create a good mid tier set up on a budget. While retro gaming is an expensive hobby, I think we can come together as a community to find places to save cash. Ultimately I want this to become the community list for when a beginner starts collecting. I hope this will be part of many YouTube descriptions.
Here are a few things that come to mind
1.No Direct HDMI adapters (besides the obvious post 7th gen consoles which natively use hdmi). The reason I am putting this requirement is because for the most part most of these cables are poor quality and don't scale video or process audio well. There are a few exceptions like retrobit prism and any gcvideo solution since they are using digital signals. There may be other exceptions for other consoles, feel free to mention them.
2.No prohibitively expensive RGB Scart or component cables. Right now I would like to set most cables at a maximum of $25. Unless it is necessary or there are no other options available, my goal is to create an inexpensive set up and have the OSSC or GBS-Control do the majority of the scaling. The most expensive parts of this set up should be the scaler and the switch boxes. The cables themselves should remain affordable. You can still post more expensive cables and if the community finds they are only good option, they will be put on the list.
3. Please post under this post any reviews or experiences you have with different cable set ups and settings.
4. While I own quite a few different consoles, some people may only own one or two consoles. I still want to hear feedback on smaller setups. For example good switch boxes, whether a retrotink setup is preferred, etc.
5. Post pictures. I would love to see pictures of different setups.
Special Note on HDMI Mods: I think they are a great option but this isn't what this post is about. This post seeks to give the community the best analogue signal on a modern television on a budget. (special exception for certain consoles like gamecube which have native digital outputs). Also I have looked at the Retrorgb website and while they are an excellent resource sometimes getting the easiest answer is hard. I want this to be a sort of click the link and buy sort of list.
THIS IS A LIST I MADE BASED ON WHAT I SAW ON RETRO RGB. DO NOT USE THIS OR PURCHASE ANYTHING UNTIL THE COMMUNITY GIVES FEEDBACK. I WILL MARK FEEDBACK ON THE TABLE. I PUT EXPENSIVE CABLES ON THIS LIST BECAUSE RETRORGB RECOMMENDED THEM. THEY CAN AND SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH LESS EXPENSIVE CABLES OF COMPARABLE QUALITY. AS OF THE DATE OF THIS POST THERE IS NO FEEDBACK.
