Just because Sony said that the PS3 would have a ten year life span, that doesn't mean the company isn't apparently moving forward with the PlayStation 4.

According to insider info (along with some speculation!), Japanese website PC Watch is reporting that Sony is looking to alternatives to the PS3's Cell architecture, which some developers have found to be challenging. One early alternative include Cell and Intel's Larrabee. Wanting a bit more horsepower, Sony has apparently abandoned this plan. Sony was also apparently considering a modified version of the Synergistic Processor Unit, but is now supposedly working on designs that include a mulit-core CPU.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all believed to be exploring new system architecture. And with the exception of a possible Wii HD, PC Watch Impress states that it takes 24 months to produce new consoles, making 2011 difficult for new hardware and 2012 or even as late as 2013 more possible.

However, PC Watch Impress notes that new handhelds will pre-date new home console hardware — so by that assumption, the PSP2 will be released before the PS4.

can they come up with a better name?
They always add another number >_> They need to change it alittle

Something better then a XMB would be nice.
If they use it again, to me it would just be a PS3.

Rumour or not, it was obvious to me before the ps3 came out... that they'd have multi-core processing... and that handhelds in the future would be just as good as my ps2.
As soon as my dad started talking about multi-core processing down at work I believed the consoles would get it, since dad said it was cheaper, to run two 2ghz processors instead of one 4ghz, and that two are less likely to get as warm as one processor.

So in the end, this news isn't surprising, in fact, we all had a niggling little feeling that it'd happen eventually.

What surprised me for certain was the DS, its microphone and touch screen... I knew the tech existed but I thought we wouldn't see any implementation for a whiles, so the DS stood as a surprise, this news isn't surprising, in fact it was more surprising that the ps3 had the one processor, instead of a multi-core.

I may go with the PS4 by the time the next consoles come out. Nintendo is getting somewhat bland, imo.

Ya, I know I shouldn't form opinions on products that aren't even out but it seems like the next Nintendo console will be more equivalent to a 360 instead of going above and beyond.

Meh, I'll wait and see.

even if it came out in 2013, it would take like 2 years for it to finalize ie. reduce price, revisions - slim, and so forth
its interesting still tht they want to make it multi core bcz if u ask me, i think ps3 is still not THAT powerful since FF13 even though its great, its not fit for the ps3 bcz there are still some bkgs and models tht could be expanded more on a better console (it looks too colorful since the detail could not be expanded)
