Did not work for me, getting "could not read data as it's not the latest data. please restart" or something :(
It didn't save properly. Redo it and save it, but wait a full minute, safely eject the card and try inject again

Thanks, I'll try it!

EDIT: Made a new savefile, edited it to unlock characters, stages and specials, saved and waited a minute, imported it from save manager via homebrew on emunand but still getting "unable to use this save data as it is not the latest data" :/

I'm not even using emunand and having the exact same issue :/ Does anybody have tips for a way around this? Waiting doesn't seem to solve any problems, the save file writes very quickly on N3ds

Delete save data value you need svdt.

I have Secure Value Patcher.... wouldn't this essentially do the same thing?

i.e.

step 1: Let SSB wipe my save and create a new one
step 2: Exit SSB and boot browserhax (or whatever homebrew you have)
Step 4: Open SaveFileEditor and backup file to SD
Step 5: Plug SD intro computer and make two copies of the "clean&new" save file
Step 6: Load one of the saves and edit all you want
Step 7: Load up SVP to fix the save data value
Step 8: Reload your SD, install onto 3ds, enjoy the hax

I've done this but for some reason it isn't working, what am I missing?

I don't understand? I am using svdt, what am I supposed to do?

Uh, get the latest svdt, and when you target sm4sh and enter the svdt,
I get the secure value thingy.
When I press A it deletes secure value as I know. This also works for acnl and others..

I got the newest version (0.10.42d), but when I target smash, there's nothing about secure value.

EDIT: I tried again using same method as before, but now it worked! yay

For everyone's help:

I was originally using SaveDataFiler, which appears to be the issue. I switched to SVDT and have had zero issues editing equipment and importing them to my game with one editor and using another editor to unlock all the basics. SVDT automatically backs up and takes care of SecureDataValues for those of us who have the eShop version (not an issue on cartridge I believe?)

Anyways, I'm still have trouble finding any consistent information on what needs to be done to make the equipment importable to Wii U (which is very important to me). I've found a very useful guide (https://supermariofiles.wordpress.com/2015/08/21/super-smash-bros-4-equipment-all-the-rng/) that breaks down all the legal values for equipment so the Wii U won't auto-tag it as hacked and reject the transfer, but despite following these guidelines I keep hearing about range values and other hex-tags that may need to be edited to make importing possible. Most I've been able to gather is if your editor let's you edit range, the safest values are 5, 9, and 11 but everything else is still a mystery.

Does anyone here have am Equipment Editor with more control built in that they would recommend? The one I'm currently using is very limited and a bit buggy, been having a hard time finding anything reliable.

Sooo, I've read the entire thread and couldn't get a solution for the issue I'm having: I'm using save data manager to get my .bin savefiles to my computer, and then I edit it (the "system" one of course) the way I want it. Then I click "save" and send it back to my SD card. When I go back to the Manager to import the save data, though, it gives me a red screen for a split second and goes back to the main menu of the Homebrew channel, and the save isn't imported. What am I doing wrong? I even tried waiting 1 minute after saving like someone said in a previous post.
