I previously mentioned this patch over on the Unfinished Projects thread, but with the gentle encouragement of resident NDS expert @Fel, decided to make an individual thread!

Released in 2009, Ore ga Omae o Mamoru (I Will Protect You) is an action-adventure, dungeon crawling, metroidvania for girls(?!)

Originally developed by Vingt et un Systems as an action RPG, the game was later taken over by newly formed brand Otomate Forte, hoping to specialise in games targeted at female players outside of the typical visual-novel genre.

The game follows elite knight Ren, who together with his best friend Veres, are sent to explore recently-discovered ruins dating back to the ancient civilisation of Edenbar. They are tasked with determining the existence of a mysterious stone known as Magicite, said to be imbued with mythical powers.

Surprisingly difficult and full of opportunities for exploration, it marks an interesting piece in the history of what might have been, and makes a fun play for gamers of all genders!

Download:

Patch download

Usage:
-Download DeltaPatcher from https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/704/
-Extract the file, and run either DeltaPatcher or DeltaPatcherLite
-‘Original file’ should be your copy of the ROM, as an ‘.nds’ filetype.
-For ‘XDelta patch’, choose the ‘MamoruPatch.xdelta’ file.
-Hit apply patch, and you’re good to go!
*Note that this will overwrite your original file. If you’d like to keep a copy of it instead, change the settings by clicking the cog icon, and tick “Backup original file”. This will create a new ‘--PATCHED.nds’ file instead.

Play this file on an emulator such as DeSmuME, or use a flashcart to play it on any member of the NDS family.

Tools:
The custom tools created for the game, MamoruTrans (source code) and MamoruHelper, have also been made publicly avaliable for those who might wish to use or to learn from them.

I have spent ~3 hours on it and, tbh, it's a pretty boring game.

It does not do well the Castlevania thing and even less the Castlevania for girls thing. It's just too clunky, it has too many looooong visual novel conversations (for obvious reasons), it's pretty difficult on the beginning (edit: actually only in the beginning, by the second dungeon you are already op), ruins design is dull and missions are just: kill this monster X times, find this flower X times, kill that boss X times, etc.

Graphics are poor and it has really heavy slowdowns when there are more than three or four enemies on screen (and the boss room as well). But it was developed by a Simple Series studio so that's expected.

Not a complain about the translation, which is great. Kudos for it.

Thank you. Hadn't heard of it before, but on first glance, yeah, was gonna say, it looks like one of the Castlevania games. Very cool.

A W E S O M E! Another Japanese DS gem brought to us.
I'm still scratching the surface of the fan translations, such ASH, or the Detective Conan one. And there were like 4 Conan DS games in Japan!

@JaNDeRPeiCH I'm pleased to hear that :rofl2:

@stranno You're welcome to that, of course  I've not played enough of the genre to know how it compares, but yeah, the slowdown can be an issue and unfortunately happens on real hardware too. I found that it actually worked in my favour sometimes haha, but agree that it can be annoying!

@wonkeytonk That's a deep rabbit hole you've fallen into! Enjoy :D

@PhantomGhost Is the grass/trees/rocks scavenging system broken? Sometimes I could dig from them but most of the time the prompt didn't appear at all, so of course the flowers mission was an absolutely pita. Except the places in the first "room", where prompts appeared all the time.

There's a limit to the number of times you can scavenge for stuff per dungeon visit which gets increased as you find the relevant skill books. You can check how many 'searches' you have left via the menu. Once you've used them all up, you have to leave the dungeon to refresh it!

Ohhhh, ok. I must skip the first room xD

There was a dialog about that but I understood other thing, my fault.

Edit: I have gave it a second chance and forget the difficulty statement. Dugeon 3/2B now and it is really easy. I beated the first (Cerbero) and the second (Dragon) bosses in a row and it was just an static button mashing battle, even when you are supposed to use the platforms in those rooms.

You should probably edit your earlier post and add this there, so that some people who don't read all comments won't be turned off by the difficulty! :D

@stranno The platforms are there to help you avoid attacks, but maybe after toughing it out so much to start, you're just too skilled at it now :rofl2: But, thanks for giving it another go and also for the amazing video and detailed review! I like that you've labelled the sections so it can also be a useful guide for others too. I'm going to add a link to it on my channel!

I'm sorry that you didn't find the game much fun in the end, but I guess it'd never be everyone's cup of tea. Hope the next one you pick up finds you better :D

@Pacheko17 Yeah, you wouldn't expect to hear "omae" romantically, would you? Especially if you consider that the speaker, Ren, is just a lowly knight talking about a member of royalty! But that's actually part of how you can see their closeness, although Ren is a bit too cool to talk about feelings (and of course, an "ore" user), he doesn't see any of their status difference and disregards all polite speech. It's something that gets lost in translation a bit, ("I Will Protect You" is the official translation printed on the Japanese title screen), but it's interesting to note!

@JaNDeRPeiCH Haha, well I won't ask you to name said site, but as a reminder, you're encouraged to buy the game if you can!
I wouldn't say the game has any explicit shounen-ai themes, but you can certainly read it that way :rofl2:

I didn't notice the accesories until my second run  I guess I wasn't paying attention enough to guild manager.

Again, great work and waiting for your next translation.

BTW: I was playing the Medusa no Inbou translation as well, but I left in an hiatus. I have to finish it. I didn't notice it was yours!

You finished the game already? Nice! How long did it take you, and how many sidequests did you complete? Do they trigger additional story scenes or dialogue?

Is it ever explained why he looks like that, or are the scribbles on his body just random design? If yes, is it positive or negative for him?

No, sorry. I meant that I left my first run earlier than the second one. I left it in the second dungeon.

Unfortunately there isn't a full guide of this game. The Gamefaqs guide by Shinobu-Maehara is pretty useful but it only covers the first dungeon. There's also a japanese wiki of the game, but the "guide" just explains the briefing of the missions.

Yeah, I've noticed - but Phantom might have some answers, since she translated the game! :)

Right, I understand! Did you stop playing the game, or are you continuing now, with the new save?
