Hello everyone,

I have ported Chex Quest to the PS Vita. This is a fully native port that uses direct system calls for video, audio, and input, without relying on SDL or any other middleware. The project is based on the generic Doom source port and has been adapted specifically for the Vita hardware.

Music is handled through OPL3 FM synthesis using Nuked-OPL3, while sound effects use a custom 8-channel software mixer. Everything is packaged into a single VPK file.

You can download the VPK from the GitHub release page: https://github.com/DraxTube/chexquest-vita

You must provide your own chex.wad file and place it in ux0:/data/chexquest/chex.wad. The port also works with doom1.wad and doom.wad if you prefer to use those instead.

The controls are mapped as follows: the left stick or D-pad moves the player, the right stick turns, Square or the right trigger fires, Cross is used to interact or open doors, and the left trigger is used to run. Holding L while pressing the D-pad scrolls through weapons, and touching the top part of the screen allows direct weapon selection through seven touch zones. Quick save is performed with L + R + D-pad up, and quick load with L + R + D-pad down.

There are a few known issues. The LiveArea icon is currently the default placeholder, as custom PNG images cause installation errors due to the Vita’s strict PNG validation. The music implementation is simplified and uses 9 OPL voices with single-voice instruments only, so it may sound different from the original PC version. Pitch bend data is parsed but not applied. The game uses nearest-neighbor scaling from 320x200 to 960x544 with no filtering. Additionally, the in-game save/load menu does not work, so you must use the quick save and quick load button combinations instead.

Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

Sweet! I'm hoping you don't mind if I repost here what I posted on the release thingy on reddit (under a different pseudonym).

"If you plan to continue refining this (and would also like to get a small amount of money for it) there's a bounty on ZealousChuck's site for a more general 'classic' Doom source port."
