noob question but how do i find out if i'm in cakes emunand or sysnand?
cakes does not use custom version string so can't use that
i also cannot use different theme for this because my emunand is linked (and i need to keep it linked because reason)

Hold L while it boots and see if the use emunand option is checked

Two (probably common) questions: How can I tell I'm in cakesFW? Just by hovering over H&S app and seeing if it's FBI? And: How can I update the system version? Just using the system settings once I'm in emunand? Is it always safe?

Updating emunand via System Settings is safe.

I have a question, too: If i wanted to launch a (N3DS) 9.0 FIRM via Cakes, how would i go about acquiring the firmware.bin and cetk? I have the appropriate 0004013820000002 CIA but i dunno how to get the out of there.

@Krude: It wouldn't work. The firmware.bin cakesfw uses is encrypted and those are only obtainable through Nintendo update server. Since Nintendo took all <9.0 files down you won't get it. The firmware.bin inside the cia is unencrypted and wouldn't work.

I made a simple solution so you can use Aureinands firmware90.bin to use with cakes fw (it is the same firmware.bin which is inside your cia)

Updating using system settings is safe and is the only safe way to update your emunand. As for knowing your in cakes you will see unsigned cias show up. Another way to know is to set your emunand theme different from your sysnand. Make sure on first launch of cakes you selected the use emunand option unless ur using sysnand with a9l

Not the "only safe way". SysUpdater CIA is perfectly safe too (for example, if he doesn't want to go to the latest version for some reason).

Not really safe. If the update files got messed up or he downloaded a bad pack. The app may be safe but a lot can go wrong with it

It's EmuNAND... By safe, I mean for his 3DS. And well, by being careful there's no reason to mess up with the files. SafeSysUpdater can check files.

That's true only the emunand would get messed up. Last I knew safesys only has the stuff to check 9.2 files so it wouldn't be able to check ones for an update.

Oh, right, I forgot that. But messed up files is a pretty rare case.

If you're careful when picking firmware files, it should be perfectly fine :)

hi all. can anybody tell where does the settings from cakes.dat is stored? is it within the cakes directory or within the cakes.dat itself? I'm just trying to understand how cakes.dat is working with the patching system.

The config/settings is stored in the "cakes" folder on sd card

Hi columbo. thanks for the reply, i get it now :)
I just checked again the cakes dir in my sd, and it does have now a config.dat, which I see contains the path to the patches directory within cakes dir.
there is also another file firmware_patched.bin, which I guess is probably the default firmware with the selected patch applied.
