I saw a thread on this, but there was no final answer and it was 4 years old. I have an r4 card, a dsi and a 3ds xl. I'd like to put the r4 into the 3ds and have it communicate with the ds using pictochat. If I remember,I thought I could access pictochat from the r4 but maybe it was a game. I read there is an .nds bios file or something that is just pictochat to put on there. I've also read there are a few games that have it-specifically a Japanese game but u have to know how to read Japanese or navigate the menu. Is this possible? If so can someone link me to the file or tell me what the games are? I appreciate your consideration. Thank you.

If you want to download the .nds rom of pictochat that works on flashcards you can get it from that iso site.

    You mean firmware.nds?

If you try to run that on a 3DS console it will take you through the Nintendo DS's initial setup menu.
After completing the setup, instead of it saving, it wil prompt you to set it up again when you try to start firmware.nds from the flashcart again.

    So, no, firmware.nds won't work on 3DS.

However, there is some JPN dictionary game that has Pictochat build in (Weird...). Just get the ROM for it.

Oh, and one more thing. If your R4 card looks something like this, it will NEVER be compatible with 3DS.

I can't since it is Nintendo copyrighted.

But you can seach YouTube for a video called DS Fat firmware on DSi (using pictochat) .

There should be a link to the file in the description of the video.

But again, it will not work on 3DS.

firmware.nds doesn't work on the 3ds. It will just always boot you into the setup. You need to use the actual Pictochat rom.

Hey so I found this dictionary program in Japansese that has pictochat. U can switch to English. I saw some youtube vids made in 2015 of people using this to do what I want- R4 in 3ds to talk to ds with pictochat. Is there a way to set it to local connection on the ds or something? Do i need to use the wifi on the r4 card? Please help if u know. Thanks.

That will work. The firmware.nds won't.

Just open Pictochat on there and choose a chatroom like the video(s) says.

Open a chatroom on the other DS/3DS system as well and it should work fine.

    Okay, check out this video

I used this exact same method and the rooms arent seeing each other. Do i need to set the ds to local or use the R4 wifi??? Please and thank you.

But its not working. They are not seeing each other for some reason. Crap! Maybe its cause I messed with the japanese options in my R4 today. Do u think it would work if I set up a new micro sd?

    Your welcome. :)

Try resetting the firmware on your R4 (delete it from your microSD card on place a fresh copy on their).

I have a fresh sd. If I use that, will it erase my saves on my R4 card? Also where do I get the firmware? I think i remember...

    Yep.

The best thing to do is backup all the contents of your microSD card into your folder on your PC and delete everything on the SD card, then put the firmware on there and see if that works.

The saves aren't stored on the R4, they are stored on the microSD card. So yes, using a fresh microSD is fine and won't affect what is on your current one :)

The following files are part of your firmware (you NEED them for your R4 to function!):
    • __rpg (folder)
    • DS_Menu.dat (file)
    And for some other R4's:
    • R4.dat (file)
    • R4iMenu (folder)
So, for you, you need the __rpg folder and the DS_Menu.dat file.

Please send me picture of your R4 card. I'll get the correct FW for you.

For anyone wanting to use the japanese dictionary rom to do this, it is called Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten. It does some light translattion too and has a kanji finder that used drawn strokes to find them. The menu is fairly easy to navigate for anyone that knows basic japanese, and even still isnt difficult to figure out from trial and error for those that dont know japanese.
