Hacking R4 pictochat

For anyone wanting to use the japanese dictionary rom to do this, it is called Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten. It does some light translattion too and has a kanji finder that used drawn strokes to find them. The menu is fairly easy to navigate for anyone that knows basic japanese, and even still isnt difficult to figure out from trial and error for those that dont know japanese.

Right, but my problem is, my 3ds with r4 is not seeing my ds and vice versa. Can you communicate using this method anymore?

Try downloading a DS Download Station ROM. Run it from your R4 on the system you are currently using your R4 in and run DS Download Play on another. See if it picks it up.

It might not work from 3ds to old ds. I havent tried. I personally havent found any particular use from pictochat since it only worked in close proximity and that close, I could just talk to whoever. This whole method might be a bit extreme considering how impractical pictochat would be for two people to use these days. If you want to chat on your ds, pick up clirc.nds homebrew for your r4. It will connect you to irc via wifi so you can chat with people worldwide without having to be in the same room obviously. I used it a lot growing up, it partially led to my marriage. Lol.

Years ago you could take a DS system to select stores (Target, Gamestop, Walmart, etc) and select DS Download Play to get a menu you could download game demos and videos from. They where lost when you powered off your system.

The way it worked were cartridges that look like this were inserted into normal NDS system which were closed and left on and plugged in to be able to distribute the demos and videos to nearby systems.

Trying the Download Station ROM on your R4 should help you determine weather it's the Pictochat DIctionary ROM not working or any wireless capable software not working correctly on your R4 flashcart.

Oh interesting. Will anyone work? I think I've seen them on somewhere but there were like 3 or two. I had to restart my pc. I was trying to put my firmware on my pc for safe keeping because now whenever I try to use another I get that ? Symbol. It said too low on memory which is weird.

Im so stupid!!! I didnt have the wifi on on the 3ds. I was trying to prevent updates. I know they dont force them but my girl is playing paper jam. didnt want her to do it by mistake. Dude u gotta let me throw u 10 bucks tomorrow for the trouble.

The switch is for street pass and local too I figured. I've had my 3ds for about 2 years. It is the first Nintendo handheld I had owned since gbc was on the shelves. Since then I've built these. There's a backlight in each. In the gba there is an sp-101 light so it's super bright. The gbc has a front light mod. It used to be blue and I put a custom bezel on. I have a tiny little gold master sword and sheath I need to attach to the lanyard hole. My friend made it for me. I turn 32 today!

It would be far easier to just grab the pictochat rom and put that on your r4. You don't need firmware.nds or the Kanji dictionary.

On a side note, does anyone know if the pictochat.nds will run on a cfw after converting to cia and installing the modified twl_firm? Haven't had the chance to try it.

Thanks dude! I had so much fun. My girl and I had dinner then went to this retro arcade/bar. We got wasted and she beat my ass in both mario kart and tekken tag. We ate at a waffle window outside a strip club called the kit kat club. It was really fun. But yeah, thanks for the wishes!

It would be far easier to just grab the pictochat rom and put that on your r4. You don't need firmware.nds or the Kanji dictionary.

On a side note, does anyone know if the pictochat.nds will run on a cfw after converting to cia and installing the modified twl_firm? Haven't had the chance to try it.

It doesn't work straight away like that, i had to use the pictochat.nds with a Homebrew Loader to get it to work.

Also for the .cia you can just get the pre-made cia off the iso site and install it to your NAND using FBI, then FBI to launch it as well.

Hey. You are right and wrong. Maybe you have a N3ds? I have an OG3ds. It works with an r4 card and you do not need homebrew menu. I havent updated my OG3DS since 9.1u I think. So I know that the Japanese dictionary game works perfect for that. Just for referencing purposes, I will do my best to try this method on a N3ds w/ current FW, but if I'm too poor to acquire one, if anybody else has a N3ds and a DS then by all means, try and share your knowlege! Thank you guys for helping me. This is a really great group of folks on this site.

This is DS mode, there really isn't any difference from N3DS to O3DS for this stuff.
Anyways, i meant taking the Pictochat.app and renaming it to Pictochat.nds, that means taking the DSi version of Pictochat and just making it into the .nds format.
Sometimes it can fail to launch this way, if you have an error doing this launch it using this: http://gamebrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_Menu
