Hacking Quick question Of installing cias with BBM

Does the game itself need to be in CIA format or can I just install updates dlc etc to normal 3ds/3dz files?

find it as a CIA>install it (with BBM)

Put the .3ds on the gw card, and the cia on the main sd card. Run the gw version and install the cia version.
