I'm well aware that its able to connect and whatnot, just wondering if I can connect the wireless controller to my PC without the adapter? I do have that little charger thing though, she black wire that let's you plug it into a Xbox. Can I use that instead? If so, what drivers do I need?

The charge cable can't be used to connect the controller to a PC.
However, you can get very cheap 3rd party wireless controller adapters from places such as eBay or DealExtreme. I got one and it looks and functions just like the official one.
