I'm doing a quick survey for a statistics project and I need to know the proportions of people in different age groups. I thought there was another topic that ran this poll but I don't know where it is at.

if you need stats on a larger scale why dont you just contact me?
I can calculate stats based on profile info from all the members.

Privacy issues, I would say. A poll only contains information that members are willing to submit.

birthday profile information is public, and besides I don't think making stats on private information isn't an issue. (otherwise why is facebook doing it)
it's not like we're collecting names, emails or something to sell them to a third party.

@Costello, I don't know about a number of other people, but when I was 6-17 or so, my parents would completely throw a fit if ANYONE online found out my real age, including website admins. There is probably a number of people here who registered using fake birth dates due to that, I sure did on all websites I went to between those ages that required registration.

In short: I wouldn't think that's a good due to the fact a lot of people probably registered using fake ages.

Well for all we know Zetta_x may be harvesting age data and sending it to marketers.

Facebook has been criticized a lot for sending private information to third-parties. Just because they do it, doesn't mean it's ethically right.

Good to know that I'm not the only one who registers with fake ages...

I also register with fake ages on porn sites.

private information and age statistics/demographics are completely different !
you are getting everything mixed up...

see, even the poll here is anonymous.
how would it affect you or anyone here if I told you the average age on the forums? the answer is: it wouldn't affect you.
a statistic is not something private or relative to one or more individual.

A concern I have is that people may fake their age when joining (it's very common for younger people) and forget about it, so when the data is gathered they can't correct it if they don't know.

Whereas for this poll, they can vote properly if they want to, a second chance.

Right, that's pretty much exactly what I said on page 1.

Too many people faking ages, especially the younger ones, too unreliable data.
