Hacking Questions about R4.

Lets say i updated my 3ds before updating the r4, why cant i just delete the kernel and download the updated kernel, won't that fix it or is the update on the actual card itself?

Because if you delete the not updated kernel and install a new one that should fix the problem? if this is true please say and if you have any other suggestions of fixing this without another ds or buying a new card please tell me.

The update is on the actual card itself.
Put simply, there is a chip inside the R4 cart. The update function in the kernel menus updates that chip. That chip determines what 3DS versions it is allowed to run on.

Kernel is not firmware, the update does not actually reside on the SD.
