Homebrew [Question] Using infrared in homebrew

The IR sensor on the 3DS can only transmit signals a few centimeters away.

Actually, just yesterday, my 2DS turned my TV on while Booting, i was at least 2 meters away and there was nothing else that could have turned it on.
I never saw that before and was surprised to find a thread asking for something like that.

I have been in the scene for awhile now, but not once I have seen anyone ever use the infared sensors in their homebrew application. Is this because we haven't figured out infared. or simply because nobody cares about infared. The main thing I would like to see infared to do is to be able to transfer/receive any file. How I can imagine this can be done is maybe modifying a circle pad pro/ old 3ds ambiio reader to have a usb out, so you can transfer files quickly and easily. Not sure about the speed, but it would be sick to just pop your 3ds into a modified circle pad pro and plug it into your computer. Please tell me if I if my idea is super impracical or impossible, I'm ok to any response :)

It is near unlikely that the IR sensor could be practically used for that sort of job. IMO it's likely better to just use an FTP client like FTBrony and another app on the recieving end of your computer to hook up with that through Wi-Fi. Sure it'll be a lot slower than simply using the Micro/SD Card in your PC but depending on the situation you either won't have an SD card port or it'll be inconvenient and will wear your card down.

As for other stuff like trading and whatnot, Wi-Fi would again be much more practical over IR but atm we either haven't documented enough to properly understand how to code it or we do know and it's just a nightmare to even try. The only practical application I could see with the IR sensor is using it for devices that are only IR compatible i.e. TVs and GBC sensor? but even then they aren't really designed for that.

The only things I could think of using the IR Sensor for with homebrew would be CPP/NFC Reader/Writer compatibility, or for patching GBC Virtual Console titles to Actually Use The Infrared. The sensor doesn't have enough range to use with TVs, unlike the GamePad's, and Wi-Fi is better for everything else. (That's a real easy opportunity for emulator/hardware cross-compatibility you missed, Nintendo! ...and now I kinda want an accessory that is a wi-fi box with link cable ports for all the old GB systems to cross-connect the 3DS or Wii U with the old systems in all possible four player combinations, but since the big N didn't even bother putting multiplayer support in their DS emulator that'll never ever happen)

seriously people should stop putting up with shoddy official emulators when the unofficial versions work so much better - maybe then every VC title would have the emulation quality of Red, Blue, and Yellow
also Snap on Wii
and PS3 emulaton/backwards compatibility of PS1/2 titles with both physical and virtual memory card support
xbox 360 emulation of xbox games, while flawed and reliant on hard drive to the point of not allowing memory card emulation with other devices, WAS cross-compatible with hardware, same as xbone emulation of 360
storing PS1 saves on PS2 memory cards
those were awesome
seriously Dolphin is compatible with the GCN broadband and modem adapters, and Devolution-running Wii/Us, all compatible with each other - official devs with source code step your damn game up
